The Country Gentlemen Tribute Band
GOLD HILL — The Country Gentlemen Tribute Band is playing a live concert at The Old Shaver School Event Center on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
In 2005 the “Bill Yates and Friends: A Tribute to the Country Gentlemen” project began. It became such a hit that the band started touring. Bill Yates toured with and fronted the band for nine years until he tragically passed away in 2015 from complications due to cancer. He leaves behind a historic legacy of music, having performed with bluegrass greats such as Red Allen, Bill Monroe and Jimmy Martin. The current lineup of the Country Gentlemen that continue to perform include: Mike Phipps on guitar and “Charlie Waller” sound-alike vocals; David Propst on mandolin and vocals; Rick Briggs on banjo and vocals; Mike Conner on upright bass and vocals; and Mark Clifton on dobro and vocals.

RiverPark’s 15th annual catfish fry
COOLEEMEE — From 11 a.m.-noon on Saturday, enjoy the annual catfish fry at Cooleemee River Park (The Bullhole) for $10/plate, child’s plate $4. The event will be held at the Margaret Woodson Picnic Shelter on the Rowan side of the park at the end of Erwin Temple Church Road. There will also be a silent auction. Proceeds enable RiverPark Inc. to keep the park open, clean and safe. South Salisbury Fire Department open house on Sunday
On Sunday, Oct. 16, the South Salisbury Fire Department will hold an open house from 2-5- p.m. at the Fire Station, 3207 Old Concord Road. This event is free and the public is invited to celebrate Fire Prevention Week. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Don’t Wait — Check The Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.” There will be station tours, fire truck demonstrations, children’s activities, educational booths and light refreshments during this family-oriented event.
PCS’ annual Old Fashioned Hymn Sing
CONCORD — The 50 voice Piedmont Choral Society will present its annual “Old Fashioned Hymn Sing” on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. at Forest Hill UMC, 265 Union St. North.
This popular event will feature older traditional, beloved hymns as well as several anthems by the choir. There will be lots of audience participation with hymn requests and group singing. The choir is directed by Joseph Judge, associate professor of music at Pfeiffer University. Accompanist is Dr. Don Simmons of Kannapolis.

Midnight’s Promise founder’s day celebration
Midnight’s Promise will be hosting its first Founder’s Day Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 4-8 p.m. at 685 Delta St.
The public is invited to enjoy a rustic country affair with a live music jam, an open fire under the pines, a campfire chicken dinner and homemade desserts. There will also be a weenie roast, toasted marshmallows and s’mores. Visitors can tour the sanctuary, meet the horses and learn their stories. Local musicians are invited to join in.

NC Transportation Museum hosts third annual Harvest Festival
SPENCER — From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15, the North Carolina Transportation Museum is throwing an old time festival complete with horse shoes, corn hole, old time games, whirligigs,corn shucking and corn shelling demonstrations. Kids can make a corn husk doll and play with old timey marbles.
There will be antique tractors on Friday, a blacksmith event both days and a Saturday-only hay ride and of course, antique and classic trains.

North Carolina Rail Yard Buddies host model train show at Brian Center
On Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., the North Carolina Rail Yard Buddies and Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation will host a model train show. The show is free and open to the public. Hot dogs, sausage, nachos, bake sale, popcorn and drinks will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit Brian Center’s Resident Holiday Gifts program.
