Area Sports Briefs: West Rowan plays SPC home game tonight at 7

First-place West Rowan (5-1, 4-0 SPC) plays Central Cabarrus (2-4, 1-3 SPC) in Mount Ulla tonight at 7 p.m. in a game that was postponed on Friday due to poor weather conditions.
Central Cabarrus started the season slowly but is coming in with momentum after a big upset win against Concord. West Rowan has won its last four games since falling to Davie County.
Both teams will have a quick turnaround, as they’ll play again on Friday. West will host East Rowan, while Central Cabarrus will be at home against South Rowan.
In the SPC race, Concord and Robinson have one loss each. West Rowan owns a win against Robinson.

College updates
Football
Keion Adams (Salisbury) had a sack in undefeated Western Michigan’s 45-30 win against Northern Illinois on Saturday. The sack came on a first down play at the WMU 17 and led to NI settling for a field goal.
Adams has 4.5 sacks this season and nine tackles for loss.

Kalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) rushed 23 times for 132 yards and added 42 receiving yards as Charlotte won, 28-23, against Florida Atlantic on Sunday in Boca Raton, Fla.

Kaleel Hollis (A.L. Brown) made seven tackles and had a pass breakup in UNC Pembroke’s 36-20 win against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.

College women’s soccer
Megan Bolick (Carson) made six saves and got the win in goal as Barton (5-5) topped Emmanuel, 2-0, in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday.
Bolick turned away Emmanuel by recording three of her six saves during a three-minute span with 10 minutes to go. The shutout was the first of Bolick’s career.

College men’s soccer
Landon Goodman (Salisbury) had an assist on the tying goal as Anderson (4-5-2) fought to a 2-2 draw with Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.

College cross country
UNC Pembroke brothers Jonathan Martin and Matthew Martin (Carson) ran personal bests in the Queens Royals Challenge held on Friday at McAlpine.
Jonathan’s time in the 8K event was 26:35, while Matthew ran 26:58.

College swimming
Junior McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) got the season off to a good start for Queens with a strong performance in a two-day meet with George Washington and Davidson.
Stevens won the 100 free (52.47 seconds) and swam on the first-place 400 free relay team.
She was second in the 200 free and 500 free and fourth in the 200 butterfly.

College women’s golf
Richmond’s Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) and her teammates are playing in Ireland this week.

College men’s golf
Gardner-Webb’s Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 77-74 — 151 in the weather-shortened Tar Heel Intercollegiate golf tournament and tied for 55th.

College volleyball
Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had 13 digs in Winston-Salem State’s 3-1 loss to Shaw.

Belmont Abbey’s Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 12 kills and seven digs in a sweep of Mount Olive on Saturday. The Crusaders are 8-2 in Conference Carolinas.

Savannah Cox (NW Cabarrus) had 18 kills for Brevard in a 3-2 loss to Carson-Newman. Hannah Elmore totaled 15 kills in Brevard’s losses to Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial.

NFL
Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had two tackles in Pittsburgh’s 31-13 win against the New York Jets on Sunday.

MLB
Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) hit his second homer of the N.L. playoffs on Sunday in the L.A. Dodgers’ 5-2 loss to Washington.

Prep cross country
In the NC Runner Elite Cross Country Invitational at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville, runners ran in hurricane conditions on Saturday.
In the boys invitational, East Rowan placed sixth.
Sean Incardona led the Mustangs. He was 12th in 17:26. Ross Alexander (38th, 18:33), Jonathan Brindle (43rd, 18:39), Chase Whitley (19:14) and Ben Jones (20:02) were the top five for the Mustangs.
Grace Faller (25:30) led East in the girls invitational race.
East freshman Adalie Harrison competed in the Freshman/Sophomore girls race and placed 11th in 22:30.

Prep tennis
This is tournament week for SPC and CCC players.
SPC players are competing at Concord’s Myers Park, while CCC players are at Lexington.
Players compete in either singles or doubles (but not both), and the top finishers will advance to regional play.

Prep golf
Led by Rachael Mast, West Davidson won the CCC championship by a large margin over second-place East Davidson. Salisbury’s team (Madison Day, Abby Robinette and Ana Romero) was third. Day and Robinette made the All-CCC team.

The Rowan County Championships are scheduled for Thursday. Carson has the county’s most consistent and accomplished golfer in Micah Furr, but East Rowan has looked like the deepest team in the SPC bi-weekly matches.

Prep volleyball
The regular season is winding down, and there will be big matches this week.
Hickory Ridge plays at Carson on Tuesday. Both teams are 17-3 overall and both have two SPC losses. Hickory Ridge has lost twice to unbeaten Cox Mill. Carson has lost to Cox Mill at home and to Hickory Ridge on the road.

In the CCC, Salisbury heads into the final week of the regular season with a 5-2 record and is tied for second place with East Davidson.
West Davidson is still unbeaten in the league.
Salisbury plays West Davidson at home on Tuesday, hosts Thomasville on Wednesday and is at rival North Rowan on Thursday.

Prep soccer
Salisbury is looking for another CCC championship — it would be the Hornets’ 13th in a row — but the Hornets are locked in quite a tussle with Lexington. The teams tied in the first meeting.
The Hornets are at home tonight for a jayvee/varsity doubleheader against East Davidson.

South Rowan is looking to finish the SPC season strong and has won three of its last four. The Raiders are on the road tonight at Robinson.
Northwest Cabarrus continues to hold on to first place in the SPC, with Cox Mill a very strong second-place team.

Local golf
In the McCanless Club Championship, Kevin Lentz shot 67-69 — 136 to win by 16 shots over Brian Howell, who shot 74-78 — 152.
In the First Flight, Ricky Honeycutt won with 80-73 — 153. Terrol Kendall shot 81-82 — 163 for second.
Randy Honeycutt’s 90-83 — 173 topped the Second Flight, with Bordie Perry next at 90-84 — 174.
Kendall is the Senior champion, while Perry is the Junior champion.

Sharon Miller won the women’s Championship Flight by shooting 73-79 — 152. Kristi Laton finished second with 83-80 — 163.
In the ladies division, Robin Leslie shot 91-88 — 179 for first place. Susan Houston also shot 179 with rounds of 89-90 and was second.

Catawba athletics
Catawba football is on the road next weekend at Mars Hill for a 1 p.m. start.

Catawba volleyball rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take a five-set win against visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday at Goodman Gym.
The Indians got a career-high 17 kills from Audrey Hoffman in improving to 8-8 overall and 6-5 in the SAC. Meredith Furr had 29 digs.

Catawba volleyball won 25-18, 12-25, 25-17 and 26-24 against Anderson on Friday.
Bri Howard led the Catawba charge with 16 kills.

A goal from Philipp Hollenhorst in the 84th minute propelled the Indians to their fifth straight win in men’s soccer. The 1-0 victory moved the Indians to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the SAC.

Host Carson-Newman scored twice in the opening 10 minutes and went on to post a 6-0 win over Catawba’s women’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon at McCown Field. Catawba fell to 6-3-1 and 5-2.

In cross country at the Royals Challenge at McAlpinePark, the Catawba women placed 16th among 40 teams, while the men were 21st among 39 teams.
Freshman Hannah Mercer ran the second-fastest time in school history for a 5K as she clocked in with a time of 18:50. Freshman Kim Deschka came in at 18:59.
On the men’s side, Catawba was led by Sean McMahon. The senior came in with an 8K time of 26.22. The time was the eighth-fastest in school history.
Catawba will next race in the SAC Championships on Oct. 22 in Columbia, S.C.

The Catawba swim teams opened their season on Friday afternoon at Johnson Pool in a dual meet with visiting Limestone. The Saint men edged out the Catawba Indians 131-127, while the Limestone women picked up a 145-74 victory.
