Area Sports Briefs: West tennis wins on Senior Night

West Rowan’s girls tennis team celebrated Senior Night with a 7-2 South Piedmont Conference win against Hickory Ridge on Wednesday.
West’s Payton Holt (WR) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles against Lilly Edwards.
Hickory Ridge’s Kristen Hill defeated Mackenzie Koontz 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6).
West’s Amber White defeated Makayla Fewster 6-0, 6-3. West’s Skylar Jahnke defeated Elizabeth Fife 6-2, 6-1.
West’s Madison Smith defeated Khushi Bashyat 6-1, 6-2. Mira White defeated Rabeya Tahir 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Holt-Koontz defeated Edwards-Hill 10-3
Fewster-Fife defeated Amber White-Abby Johnson 11-9
Janke-Mira White defeated Bashyat-Tahir 10-2
West finished the regular season 9-4 and was 6-3 in the SPC.
The SPC tournament to qualify singles and doubles representatives for regional play starts on Tuesday at Concord’s Myers Park.

JV cross country
West Rowan’s Alex Keadle won Wednesday’s jayvee race in the Rowan County Championships at Dan Nicholas Park.

Prep golf
Hickory Ridge shot 136 to win Wednesday’s SPC match at Warrior.
East Rowan had its best match of the season and shot 137 for second place. Cox Mill was third at 139.
East scorers were Camryn Corriher (43), Hailey Fesperman (47) and Micah Loper (47).
Carson tied for fourth at 147. Carson’s Micah Furr was medalist with a 35.
Ella Ferguson’s 48 led West Rowan (157).
Ellyse Scarborough shot 48 to lead South Rowan (162).

Women’s soccer
Queens tallied a 1-0 shutout of visiting Catawba in SAC women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Royals improved to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fell to 6-2-1 and 5-1.
The lone goal of the match came in the 20th minute. Kathy Fisher was able to lift a shot from outside the right of the box that found the back upper left of the goal.
Catawba will be at Carson-Newman on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Men’s soccer
Catawba claimed its fourth straight win in men’s soccer action, topping host Queens 2-1 on Wednesday at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Catawba Indians improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Royals fell to 5-5 and 2-4.
Thar Thwai scored for a 1-all tie for the Indians. Ian Orr Lake Norman) knocked home a cross from Jack Pettett for the game-winner.
Matt Wilkinson saved a ball off the goal line with just three minutes to play.

Prep volleyball
South Rowan got seven kills and three blocks from Breanna Lentz and beat Central Cabarrus, 25-16, 25-10 and 25-9.

Carson swept Concord by scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-4.

College tennis
Catawba’s women stayed unbeaten with a 6-3 win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s men beat the Indians, 8-1.
The Catawba teams will be in action again on Oct. 13 as they travel to Lees-McRae for 2 p.m. matches.

Jayvee football
In a jayvee game moved up to Wednesday, Salisbury won 33-18 against East Davidson.
Tyrone Johnson threw TD passes of 65 and 73 yards to Jamari McCullough.
Luke Holland (9 yards), Jabril Norman (4 yards) and Juwan Poole (4 yards) had touchdown runs.
Johnson had a two-point conversion, while Holland kicked a PAT.
Leading the defense for Salisbury (3-3) were Elijah De la Rosa and Blaine Shellhorn.

CCC soccer
Lexington edged Thomasville, 2-1, and East Davidson topped West Davidson, 1-0.

7th-grade football
China Grove defeated Southeast, 34-0, on Tuesday.
Gabe Pozyck scored three TDs on runs of 59, 33 and 37 yards.
Nathan Chrismon scored on a 62-yard run, and Aiden Kirchbaum scored on a 16-yard run.
Jacob Ritchie kicked two PATs.
Defensive standouts for the Red Devils were Pozyck, Keison Tillman, Myles Vanover, Eduardo Palafox, Brandon Haas and Damien Hernandez. Ben Stegall had a sack.
