RALEIGH — Two area residents were honored at the annual North Carolina State Grange convention held recently in Raleigh. The organization awarded Steve Garver and Crystal Allen with Firefighter of the Year and Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, respectively. The two are recipients of the awards from Corriher Grange #627.

The Grange is a family-oriented community service organization with a special interest in agriculture. Local granges are active in improving their communities through service projects and volunteerism.

Garver is a veteran firefighter and has been with the Atwell Volunteer Fire Department for 41 years, a statement said. He is a member of the North Carolina State Firefighters Association. During his time with Atwell, Garver has served as a firefighter/medical responder. He’s also served as lieutenant, captain, safety officer and medical coordinator.

He is currently the assistant chief and treasurer of the board of directors.

“Steve not only serves his neighbors and community residents through Atwell Volunteer Fire Department, but volunteers for first aid and traffic control in the bike rides for the Red Cross and the Brain Injury Foundation, 5K runs for Love Thy Neighbor, Millbridge Elementary and the China Grove run.

Allen works with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety in the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice. She is a probations officer II, a sworn law enforcement officer, certified by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Allen is assigned to Judicial District 19A in Cabarrus County. She is in charge of supervising probationers who have been designated as sex offenders by the State of North Carolina.

Corriher Grange, part of the Corriher Grange community since 1929, will meet on Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. for their annual booster night program. The Hall is located at 1585 Corriher Grange Road, Mooresville.
