SALISBURY — A local man remains behind bars on Friday after he was charged with stealing rings worth $5,000 from K-Dee’s Jewelry store in downtown Salisbury.

David Ryan Wood, 29, of the 900 block of Sunset Drive, Salisbury, was charged with felony larceny. He remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $3,000 secured bond.

Police said Wood entered the store and spoke with an employee about repairing a watch battery. He asked another employee if he could place a piece of jewelry on hold and, officials said, while the employee did that, he stole a ring set worth $5,000 from a cabinet and walked out of the store.

The jewelry store put video surveillance still images on its Facebook page asking if anyone knew the man. The post had over 100 shares, which led to someone identifying him.

Police checked area pawn shops — one said they didn’t buy the ring while another did. Police were able to get a name.

Wood has been convicted of larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of schedule III controlled substance, possession of schedule II controlled substance, assault on a female and possession of schedule VI; all of which are misdemeanors.

He is expected in court this morning for his first appearance.
