KANNAPOLIS — School was cancelled this morning for students at A.L. Brown High School.

At about 7 a.m. this morning a traffic accident in front of the school damaged a power pole, Kannapolis police reported. According to Captain Terry Spry with Kannapolis police, emergency personnel responded to a single car crash at the intersection of East First Street and York Avenue.

When they arrived, a 2000 Honda minivan with heavy front end damage was parked in the parking lot of Trinity United Methodist Church, Spry said. The church is across the road from A.L. Brown.

The driver, Tracy Jackson, told police that she became distracted while traveling east on East First Street, ran off the right side of the roadway, striking a utility pole, and continued through a chain link fence before coming to rest. Jackson and a  juvenile passenger had minor injuries.

As a result, the pole will have to be replaced, and electricity to the school will be out for much of the day, Ellen Boyd, director of community relations for Kannapolis City Schools said. Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis said repairs should be finished in the afternoon. However Spry said police had not heard from Duke Energy yet about when power would be restored to the school.

Classes will resume at A.L. Brown on a normal schedule on Wednesday. All other KCS schools are operating on a normal schedule today.
