SALISBURY — A Salisbury man who crawled from under a vehicle that crashed Tuesday on West Horah Street and ran was in possession of drugs and a handgun and was wanted by Forsyth County authorities, according to police.

Eric George Hyman, 28, was involved in a single-vehicle crash in the 800 block of West Horah Street near Vanderford Street. Police said they believe he dozed off, ran off the road, struck a concrete step in front of a house, overcorrected and overturned. The crash occurred just after 2:30 p.m.

Initially, witnesses said they thought a white van that left the scene rather quickly was involved, but police confirmed no other vehicle was involved in the crash. Hyman was found, bloody and injured, behind a home on West Horah Street. When police told him he needed medical attention, he took off.

A foot chase ensued, and Hyman was found a short time later. He was placed into a waiting ambulance and taken to the hospital.

Police Officer Matt Benjamin said when the wrecker service righted the car, a semi-automatic handgun fell to the floorboard. Officials found substances that tested positive as heroin and cocaine on Hyman when he went to the hospital, police said.

The 2000 Ford Taurus, which was totaled, did not belong to Hyman, officials said. He is wanted in Forsyth County for a probation violation. He remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond.

Salisbury Police continue to investigate, and officials say charges are pending.
