LANDIS — Downtown Landis will soon say goodbye to its old hardware store. The building, located at 116 N. Central Ave. has been slated for demolition since March.

The town board put out bids in March, and had received five offers ranging from approximately $13,000 to $39,000. At the time, Town Manager Reed Linn advised the board to wait until the next fiscal year before accepting a bid, allowing the town to budget the expense. The board accepted the recommendation.

Monday at its monthly business meeting, the board voted unanimously to accept a demolition bid from MRB Enterprises, Inc. for $12,780. The expense includes asbestos removal.

The board was also presented with a print of an American flag by the Woodmen Life Chapter 111. The names of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 were colored and arranged to form the flag’s stripes. Mayor Mike Mahaley said the flag would be hung in the town board room.

In other business:

  • Landis police and firefighters were presented with certificates from the American Legion Post 146 and the Post 146 Auxiliary in thanks for participating in a back to school safety event.
  • The board adopted a resolution to apply for a grant authorized by the Federal Clean Water Act Amendments of 1987 and the North Carolina Water Infrastructure Act of 2005, which offers 90-10 grants up to $150,000. Should Landis be awarded the grant, the monies will be used to fund sewer and water system asset inventories and assessments. Town officials said labor could be used as the town’s 10 percent contribution, meaning that the town would not have to spend any funds should it acquire the grants.
  • The town’s annual cancer awareness walk will be held on Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. Participants should meet at the pool.
  • The railroad crossing at West Ryder Avenue will be closed to through traffic from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10. Drivers should use the crossing at East Mill Street. After Oct. 10, the West Ryder Avenue crossing will re-open, and the East Mill Street crossing will be closed permanently.
