Calling all Dachshunds … Start Your Engines!

MOORESVILLE — Mooresville will hold its annual Wiener Race on Saturday, Oct. 8. The event was originally organized by Roberta Roberts in 2005 and has since been sponsored by various animals groups.

Aside from having loads of fun watching feisty dachshunds do their racing thing, the event has a serious side as well: to help local animal advocates raise awareness and funds for their causes. This event is open for participation to nonprofit groups whose prime directive is to help our animal friends, both large and small.

The fee to register and race is $25 along with proof of all required vaccinations. Registration forms can be downloaded from www.mooresvillewienerrace.com and must be submitted no later than Sep. 31, with no registrations accepted on race day. Entries are limited to the first 180 applicants submitting proper registration forms. In addition to awarding trophies to winners of the four racing divisions (puppies, juniors, adults and seniors), wieners can compete for “Cutest” and “Best Dressed” as well.

Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. on race day with the first heat starting at 11 a.m. At the check-in desk, each entrant will be given a starting number. The puppy division runs first, followed by seniors, both of which will run a 25 foot long course. Juniors and adults are next, running 35 feet to cross the finish line. The Cutest and Best Dressed contest and awards ceremony follows, along with a raffle for vendor gifts and services.

T-shirts featuring mascot “Moorie” will commemorate the event with original artwork commissioned from national cartoonist Michael Gallagher.

Proceeds will be distributed among the participating non-profit animal advocates including Friends of the Animals and The Humane Society of Iredell. For information, rules, entry forms, map, vendor forms, visit our www.mooresvillewienerrace.com
