Area Athletes Update …
Volleyball
Averett’s Lynsey Corriher (South Rowan) missed last volleyball season with an injury, but she’s back on the court now.
Corriher is doing some setting and playing a lot of defense for the Cougars, who have started the season with a 5-0 record.
Corriher had 16 assists and seven digs in her first match. She had 24 digs and 10 assists as Averett won four matches in the Cougar Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
Nicole Barringer (South), had a great career at Averett and is now on the coaching staff there.
•••
Winston-Salem State freshman Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had 47 digs and helped the Rams get off to a 3-0 start.
•••
Brevard volleyball started off 0-4. Hannah Elmore (Carson) had 24 kills and four blocks in a tournament played in Florida. Savannah Cox (NW Cabarrus) had 36 kills and six blocks for the Tornados.
•••
Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball started the season 1-2. Emma Pope (South) had five digs, while Tiffany Brooks (South) had two.
•••
Belmont Abbey went 0-4 in a season-opening tournament at Queens. Aimee Cloninger (Carson) produced 12 kills and 29 digs for the Crusaders.
•••
Catawba started 1-3 in the tournament at Queens. Freshman Morgan Hester (Carson) had three digs, three assists and two aces.
Men’s soccer
The first college goal for Anderson freshman Landon Goodman (Salisbury) was a big one. Goodman played only 15 minutes, but he converted the game-deciding goal late in a 2-1 win against Flagler on Saturday.
Men’s cross country
Charlotte’s Zachary Marchinko (Carson) had an impressive college debut, running 15:47.2 in the Charlotte Preview for third place.
Charlotte is loaded with talent and there had been some thought that Marchinko might redshirt, but there’s no longer any doubt he’ll be in uniform as a freshman.
•••
Western Carolina’s Jordan Bostian (West Rowan) ran 16:27 in the 5K WCU Invitational and finished 18th.
Western’s Jacob Fink (Carson) ran 16:20 for 16th.
Women’s cross country
Georgia Southern’s Rebecca Parker (West) ran 19:52 and was 16th in the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C. Parker helped Georgia Southern finish third.
•••
In the Western Carolina Invitational’s two-mile run, freshman Josie Heglar (West) was 29th in 12:38.
•••
In the Campbell Invitational cross country meet, UNC Wilmington’s Sarah Goodnight (Gray Stone) was sixth in 18:16 and UNCW’s Kelsey Kiser (Gray Stone) was ninth in 18:20.
NFL
Chris Smith (West) had three tackles, one for loss, in Jacksonville’s final preseason game, and the third-year pro made another opening day roster.
•••
Rookie Javon Hargrave (North) had three tackles and shared a sack in Pittsburg’s final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. There was never any doubt that the third-round pick would be on the opening day roster.
•••
Safety L.J. McCray (Catawba) made the opening day roster for the San Francisco 49ers.
•••
While Romar Morris (Salisbury) was waived by the New York Jets, it was with an injury designation.
Morris injured his left shoulder badly enough in practice that he may need surgery. If he’s not claimed by another team, he could end up back with the Jets on their injured reserve list.
College football
MyQuon Stout (Carson) started at nose tackle for Appalachian State in the near-upset of Tennessee on Thursday. Stout had three tackles, one for loss, and was credited with a QB hurry.
•••
In UNC Pembroke’s 20-17 win against Winston-Salem State on Saturday, there were A.L. Brown Wonders on both sides. Linebacker Kyrell Williamson made five tackles for the Rams, while DB Kaleel Hollis made three tackles for the Braves.
Chris Hassard (West) was the starting center for UNC Pembroke.
•••
Devin Mason (South) started at defensive end and made two tackles for Guilford in a 69-0 romp against Greensboro.
•••
A field goal by freshman Brennan Lambert (South Rowan) accounted for Catawba’s points in a 23-3 loss at West Georgia.
Starting linebacker Jamal Lackey (Davie) made two tackles for the Indians. Josh Moses (East Rowan) made one.
•••
Georgia freshman Marshall Long averaged 38.5 yards on four punts in the win against UNC. Long’s longest punt was 47 yards. One poor punt hurt his average, but he had three good ones.
•••
True freshman Jayln Cagle (A.L. Brown) had two carries for 11 yards as Gardner-Webb rolled against Elon.
•••
Golf and tennis will start soon.
