Once again

How many times have we done Negative Doubles? Before your eyes glass over, this is the second part of the convention that is not as well known.

This is the scenario: Your partner opens, RHO bids a suit, you hold the suit named and another suit and have 8-16 points. If playing Negative Doubles you have lost the direct penalty double so you must pass. It is then necessary for partner to “protect your pass.” If opener (your partner) then bids a suit or NT he shows a strong hand or a very distributional hand. If he passes he shows a minimum opening hand with wasted values in the overcalled suit. With other hands opener will “double” allowing you to pass if you wanted to make a penalty double and couldn’t because you are playing “negative doubles.” Rarely when opener doubles, will you have a very bad hand; you must find a bid even if you must pick a 3 card suit.
