Teams deserve recognition for their great seasons

What a summer!

We would like to say a big thanks to our two sports teams who competed in the World Series games this summer, the Rowan County American Legion team and the Little League Girls Softball Team. What a thrill it was to watch both of these teams play. They may have finished second but they’re still No. 1 to all their fans.

As it was said before, both of these teams showed great sportsmanship and a lot of class in the way they handled their defeat, as well as their wins. “Thanks” seems to be a small word to say for all they accomplished, but we are very proud of them and their coaches, and we wish them all the very best.

Salisbury/Rowan County should be proud, too, and they need to recognize these young folks for a job well done. We know there was a parade for the girls, but no one knew anything about it until it was over. And as far as the Legion team is concerned, nothing was done for them.

Come on, people, show your appreciation and honor these fine young athletes for putting up with the hot weather and for giving it their all. It was a summer we all will remember.

About county’s riot gear

Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. Don’t we have more pressing needs? Our officers could use a pay raise. We have citizens sleeping on the street, our schools are begging for more funds and some of our children only get breakfast when school is in session.

A Wagon Wheel romance

I am sorry to hear that the Wagon Wheel is closing. I met my wife, Rachel, there on Nov. 14, 1979 — 37 years ago. We were regulars there on Friday and Saturday nights until we started having knee problems and had to stop dancing.

We really had a great time there. We would do about all the dances. We loved to clog, two-step, polka, square dancing and flat footing. My wife and I have great memories of the Wagon Wheel. Thank you for all the great times we had there. Sorry y’all are closing. God bless all.
