SALISBURY — New students, including members of the class of 2020 and transfers, were welcomed into the Catawba College community during an opening convocation ceremony held in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on Aug. 16.

Those gathered were greeted by Salisbury Mayor Karen Kirks Alexander, Rowan County Commission Chairman Greg Edds and Catawba College board of trustees Chairwoman Darlene Ball, among others, before new students signed into the college registry as members of the campus community and pledged to uphold the college honor code. Catawba President Brien Lewis delivered the convocation address, while college Provost Dr. Michael Bitzer shared details about academic traditions, including the college mace.

New students joined returning students, faculty and staff on the lawn for photographs and a community picnic following the ceremony that kicked off the institution’s 166th academic year.
