SALISBURY — The filing period for the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education ends today at noon. Three seats are up for grabs this fall, covering the eastern, southeastern and Salisbury districts. So far, eight candidates have filed to run. The board’s three incumbents are all seeking re-election this year, but each has at least one challenger.

Michael Julian, a concerned parent who declared his candidacy in spring after a controversial proposal to close six area elementary schools was heard, is running against current board Chairman Josh Wagner for seat 3, representing the eastern part of the county. Seat 3 represents East Rowan High School, Erwin Middle School, Granite Quarry Elementary School, Morgan Elementary School, Rockwell Elementary School and Shive Elementary School.

Incumbent Susan Cox, who currently holds seat 7, representing the southeast district, has two opponents. Andrew Poston, former candidate for the N.C. House 77th District, declared his candidacy alongside Julian. He’s joined by William “Dr. Rob” Robertson, a former educator and founder and operator of the Salisbury Music Conservatory. Seat 7 represents Jesse Carson High School, China Grove Middle School, Southeast Middle School, Bostian Elementary School, Knollwood Elementary School, Faith Elementary School and Koontz Elementary School.

The final seat — seat 5, representing Salisbury — was uncontested until Wednesday afternoon. Incumbent Chuck Hughes filed to run for re-election on July 22, the first day of the filing period, and was unchallenged until Wednesday, when Gene Miller, former Rowan-Salisbury assistant superintendent of operations, entered the race. Thursday afternoon, Alisha Byrd, founder of Gemstones Academy, also filed to run against Hughes. Seat 5 represents Salisbury High School, Knox Middle School, Overton Elementary School and Isenberg Elementary School.

The filing period remains open until noon. Candidates file at the Rowan County Board of Elections, in Suite D10 at West End Plaza, 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd. West. There is a $5 filing fee. Direct filing questions to 704-216-8140.
