Rowan County’s 12U softball team was granted a forfeit in the Little League World Series on Sunday in Portland, Ore.
The Snow Canyon, Utah, team, which has mostly Mormon players, had informed officials prior to the tournament that it would not play a game on a Sunday.
Officially, it goes in the books as a 6-0 Rowan win.
Rowan went 4-0 in pool play to get a No. 1 seed for tournament play.
Michigan, which won a tough game late Saturday against Utah, went 3-1 for second place in Rowan’s pool, while Utah was 2-2 for third place.
Pool play is over now and the quarterfinals start today. Rowan, the defending champ, is three wins away from repeating.
Rowan takes on the Netherlands, a No. 4 seed, today at 4 p.m.
Texas is the other No. 1 seed coming out of pool play. Texas went 4-0 and plays against Canada today.

Intimidators win
KANNAPOLIS— Ian Hamilton got Damek Tomscha to hit into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 2-1 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Sunday.
After five scoreless innings, Kannapolis got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Danny Mendick hit an RBI double and then scored on a single by Alex Call.
In the top of the ninth, Lakewood saw its comeback attempt come up short after Jose Pujols hit an RBI single, bringing home Emmanuel Marrero to cut the deficit to one.
Jack Charleston (2-4) went three scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out two and walking one to get the win. Zach Morris (7-3) went three innings, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out one in the South Atlantic League game.

Knights win
DURHAM— Leury Garcia scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 13th inning to lead the Charlotte Knights to a 4-3 win over the Durham Bulls on Sunday.
Garcia scored after he led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then went to third on a strikeout by Jerry Sands.
Nicky Delmonico homered and singled, driving home two runs in the win.
Brad Goldberg (2-5) got the win with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while Ryne Stanek (1-3) took the loss in the International League game. Matt Purke retired the side in order for his first save of the season.
For the Bulls, Jake Goebbert homered and singled twice.

Dash
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Matt Esparza and three other pitchers combined for a shutout as the Lynchburg Hillcats beat the Winston-Salem Dash 6-0 on Sunday.
Esparza (1-2) picked up the win after he struck out six and walked one while allowing five hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Zach Thompson (2-4) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs and eight hits in the Carolina League game. He also struck out six and walked one.
In the bottom of the first, Lynchburg grabbed the lead on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Bradley.
The Hillcats then added three runs in the third and two in the sixth. In the third, Bradley hit a two-run homer, and Claudio Bautista hit one in the sixth.
