Area Sports Briefs: Sands homers to lead Knights

DURHAM— Former Catawba slugger Jerry Sands hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning, leading the Charlotte Knights to a 5-1 win over the Durham Bulls on Saturday.
The home run by Sands started the scoring in a five-run inning and gave the Knights a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, Jacob May and Tony Campana hit RBI singles.
The homer was the seventh for Sands, who has 23 RBIs.

Intimidators
KANNAPOLIS— Cornelius Randolph had three hits and scored two runs, and Alberto Tirado struck out nine hitters over six innings as the Lakewood BlueClaws defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 6-1 on Saturday.
Tirado (4-1) allowed one run and three hits to get the win.
Lakewood went up 3-0 in the third after Damek Tomscha hit an RBI single, driving in Randolph.

Local golf: Edwards
The U.S. Amateur Championship runs Monday through Sunday (Aug. 15-21) at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.
Eric Edwards (Salisbury, George Mason) qualified for the 312-man field.
Golfers will play 36 holes (Monday and Tuesday) and the low 64 will advance to the single-elimination match play tournament beginning on Wednesday. The two finalists meet in a 36-hole final.
Edwards’ parents, Todd and Lisa, will be at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Edwards’ high school teammate, Alex Nianouris, who played at Davidson, will serve as Edwards’ caddy.
Edwards tees off at 1:25 p.m. on Monday in a group with Washington’s Corey Pereira and Kent State’s Ian Holt.
Fox Sports 1 will air coverage beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, while FOX will televise action on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 3 p.m.
The USGA web site will stream coverage from 11-1 on Thursday and Sunday.

W-S Dash
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Nick Basto hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Winston-Salem Dash to a 7-5 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Saturday.
The home run by Basto scored Mason Robbins.
The Dash scored one run in the eighth before Lynchburg tied the game 5-5 in the ninth when Bobby Bradley hit an RBI single, driving in Mark Mathias.
Winston-Salem starter Tanner Banks went six innings, allowing three runs and six hits. He also struck out five and walked two. Jacob Morris (2-3) got the win in relief.
