Local student attends National Youth Leadership Forum

Addison Day, a rising fourth-grader at Overton Elementary School was selected to attend the Envision: National Youth Leadership Forum Pathways to STEM conference at Wake Forest University. The forum encourages students in grades third through fifth to explore various careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Students spend the week studying engineering, medicine and forensic science while engaging in simulations and role-playing exercises to get them thinking about the future.

Carson grad earns scholarship

Megan Bolick of Salisbury, a graduate of Jesse Carson High School, is the recipient of a John J. Harper Scholarship at Barton College. The renewable scholarship will cover $20,000 of tuition, divided into increments of $5,000 per year for four years.

Bolick is the daughter of Jennifer and David Bolick of Salisbury. She will enter Barton College in the fall semester.

The John J. Harper Scholarship is awarded to entering freshmen who are well prepared to meet the challenges of a liberal arts education. Criteria for this award includes a minimum 2.5 GPA with a minimum SAT score of 850 or a minimum ACT score of 17, or a minimum 3.25 GPA regardless of SAT or ACT score. A 2.5 GPA must be maintained to retain the scholarship four years. In addition to the required renewal GPA, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress, as outlined in the college catalog and be enrolled continuously on a full-time basis.

Bolick was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. She played on the varsity soccer team for four years and earned the SPC All-Conference Award.
