The Third Annual Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival

The Third Annual Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Shrine Club on High Rock Lake, 6480 Long Ferry Road. There are 25 teams registered. The event is free to attend; however no pets, coolers or outside food will be allowed.

Learn about local moonshining and bootlegging

KANNAPOLIS — Mount Pleasant native Vickey Cline has been a member of the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society for 40 years.

Cline says, “Most people like to think of their ancestors as saints, but the sinners are more interesting.”

She came across old newspaper stories about local moonshining and bootlegging in her research, plus remembrances of childhood stories resulted in a presentation on the “spirits” of our area.

Come hear about the attitudes toward alcohol of Lutherans, Presbyterians, Baptists and Methodists. Learn how textile mills impacted local moonshining. Monday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. in the A. L. Eighth annual Parade of Power 

CONCORD — NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer, XFINITY Series driver Darrell Wallace Jr. and Charlotte Motor Speedway officials will wave the green flag on the legendary speedway’s action-packed fall Season of Speed during the eighth annual Parade of Power on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Vehicles representing those that will compete this fall at Charlotte Motor Speedway, zMAX Dragway and The Dirt Track at Charlotte will parade down Bruton Smith Boulevard, beginning at Concord Mills Mall and ending at the speedway’s Avenue of Flags.

The free fan event will include a Q&A and autograph session with the drivers, special ticket offers, the Charlotte Motor Speedway Fan Van and more. The first 100 fans to pick up a wristband beginning at 8 a.m. on event day will be able to take part in an autograph session.

The Parade of Power is expected to include more than two dozen vehicles, including NASCAR stock cars, a World of Outlaws dirt late model, an MXGP dirt bike, NHRA dragsters and Pro Modified cars, a Legend Car and Bandolero, the speedway’s Rosenbauer fire engine, classic and luxury automobiles and more.

The parade starts at noon at Concord Mills Mall and will arrive at Charlotte Motor Speedway about 12:15 p.m. The Q&A and autograph session follows along the Avenue of Flags.

 

National Night Out at Salisbury Women’s Club

5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2: There will be hot dogs, a fish fry and fellowship, fire trucks, golf cart riding, a big bouncer for the kids, singing, and many more activities. It will be held at Salisbury Women’s Club, 1237 Old West Innes St. Sponsored by the VA Community Watch and Salisbury Police Department.
East Spencer’s National Night Out is Aug. 16 

6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16: Third annual community-police awareness-raising event. Activities taking place in the Fire Annex parking lot, 207 S. Perfecting the Craft: Downtown Salisbury’s second annual Summer Sip Series

Downtown Salisbury Inc. will host its second annual Summer Sip Series featuring more than 30 North Carolina breweries on Friday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 6.

The “Summer Sip Crawl” will be held on Friday, Aug. 5 from 5-9 p.m. This event features 35 downtown Salisbury locations including the best bars, restaurants and stores. Each location will feature a beer from a different brewery. Participants can visit the various locations throughout the evening to experience a “tour of NC brews.” Tickets are $20 and include a souvenir tasting glass, wrist band and walking map.

The “Summer Sip Festival” begins Saturday, Aug. 6 from 3-7 p.m. More than 30 North Carolina breweries will be featured. There will be vendors, food trucks and live music from “Dark Water Rising,” an internationally known band from Southeastern North Carolina, and Salisbury natives “Big Break.”

New Sarum Brewing Company will host an exclusive after-party for ticket holders which will feature the bands “Dangermuffin” and “The Josh Daniel/Mark Schimick Project.”

Tickets for the festival are: General admission $35; Designated Driver tickets $10; VIP (limited availability) $60; and a two-day pass to both events for $50.

Get ready for ‘A Really Big Shew’ 
Submitted — The Salisbury-Rowan Symphony is hosting the “Ed Sullivan Show” Tribute, featuring Kent Bernhardt as Ed Sullivan on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Be part of the live studio audience in the Norvell Theatre in downtown Salisbury. Enjoy light refreshments and a grand show. Tickets are $20, and seating is limited.

You will get to experience stars such as, “Bette Midler” (Mary Ann McCubbin), “Elvis Presley” (Michael Thomas), and “The Beatles” (Catawba College All-star Vernaculars). To keep a variety show-like atmosphere, other possible featured performers include a stand-up comedian, a dance team, a magician, and an opera singer.

David Whisenant will be the announcer for accompanying vintage and new commercials, and clips of past performances will add to the nostalgia.

Artistry in Woodturning exhibit opens
CONCORD — “Artistry in Woodturning,” an exhibit of works by members of the Southern Piedmont Woodturners Inc. (SPW), will be up from July 30 through Aug. 27 in the Main Gallery at ClearWater Artist Studios. The opening reception is Saturday, July 30, from 1-4 p.m., with an artist talk to be given at 2 p.m. by Charles Farrar, noted local artist. This show will feature 60-some turned works by members that are exemplary of the artistry possible within this craft. The show will also include works by ClearWater’s resident leather-smith.
