Catawba is picked 15th in the Sporting News College Football Magazine preseason poll.
Catawba returns 15 starters from a year ago, including nine on defense, from a unit that went 9-3 and won the South Atlantic Conference championship.
Catawba returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2007 before bowing out to Tuskegee in the opening round. Catawba opens on Sept. 3 at No. 3 West Georgia.
Catawba junior linebacker Kyle Kitchens was named to the preseason Division II All-American team after earning Region Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2015. Kitchens was named a second team All-American last season by the CCA, d2football.com and Little AP.

Local golf
In the first round of the Cardinal Amateur at Sedgefield on Friday, Davis Richards (South Rowan, NC State) shot 2-under 69 to tie for fifth.
Richards made an eagle 3 on the par-5, 576-yard No. 15 hole.
Eric Edwards (Salisbury, George Mason) had a steady round and opened with a 71 in the 54-hole event.

Youth track
Brittany Ellis, 10, was named the Field Events MVP at the North Carolina Area Region 25 Track &Field Championships.
A girl and boy were chosen in each age group as MVP on the track and on the field.

Men’s Fall Open League softball coaches meeting is Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at Hall Gym.

Intimidators win
LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Alex Call homered and singled twice, driving in two runs as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 7-5 on Friday.
Johan Cruz homered and singled with two runs for Kannapolis.
Down 1-0 in the first, Lakewood grabbed the lead when Damek Tomscha hit an RBI single and then scored on a three-run home run by Jose Pujols.
After Lakewood tied the game 5-5 in the third, the Intimidators grabbed the lead in the fifth inning when Danny Mendick hit an RBI double and then scored on a single by Grant Massey.
Lakewood missed a scoring opportunity in the fifth, when Josh Tobias flew out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Knights fall
INDIANAPOLIS— Pedro Florimon hit a two-run single in the seventh inning, leading the Indianapolis Indians to a 3-1 win over the Charlotte Knights on Friday.
In the bottom of the fifth, Indianapolis broke a scoreless tie on a solo home run by Jose Osuna. Charlotte answered in the seventh when Tony Campana hit an RBI single, driving in Vinny Rottino.
Dovydas Neverauskas (2-2) got the win in relief.
