SALISBURY — Two new members have been elected to join the Catawba College board of trustees by unanimous vote of the board. Dr. Randall S. Crumpler of Garner, a 1975 graduate, and 2012 graduate Yakir Malul of Atlanta, Ga., were elected during the June meeting of the Board and will attend their first meeting as members in October.

Crumpler is a physician with Garner Family Physicians, a nine-doctor medical practice in Garner. He and his wife Kathryn live in Raleigh, and have two grown children, Connor and Mary Glenn.

While attending Catawba College Crumpler was on the basketball team and served as its captain from 1973 to 1975. He was a Whitener Award recipient in 1975. Following graduation from Catawba College, Crumpler  received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem.

Crumpler has served on Catawba’s alumni board and on its board of visitors, and has been a longtime member of the Chiefs Club. A loyal donor, he supports the college’s annual fund, men’s basketball team and music program, among many others. He has also helped the college accomplish additional projects such as improvements to campus landscaping, dorm renovations and the recent Goodman Gym renovations.

Yakir Malul

Yakir Malul of Rishon Le-Zion, Israel, is a 2012 cum laude graduate of Catawba College. He currently resides in Atlanta, Ga., where he is a senior consultant at EY Advisory Services.

While at Catawba, he majored in business administration with a concentration in accounting, and minored in sociology. His academic efforts placed him consistently on the Dean’s List. Malul was honored as the male recipient of the Whitener Award in 2012, and was also inducted in 2012 into the Business Honor Society.

A competitive student-athlete, Malul was a member of the swim team during his college career, earning academic all-American honors. He was one of two Catawba recipients of the SAAC Award for the highest cumulative GPAs for seniors. He also served as a resident assistant.

Active in the Student Government Association on campus, he served as sophomore class senator, executive treasurer, and as executive president. He was a member of the Philomatheans, a men’s service organization on campus, and served on the CatawbaPalooza Planning Committee. He found time off campus to volunteer at the local homeless shelter and the animal shelter. He also volunteered to provide swimming lessons to children at Nazareth’s Children’s Home.

During the summer of 2012, Malul was one of two Catawba students placed as interns with Rowan Helping Ministries, which provides assistance in meeting basic human needs for those finding themselves in crisis in Rowan County. Malul served there as a compliance auditing intern, with his efforts focused on ensuring that the organization accounted for its expenditure of funds and allocation of resources as required by private grants and state and federal programs. Funding and coordination for the internship program were provided through Catawba’s Lilly Center for Vocation and Values.

In recognition of his academic performance in his major concentration, accounting, he was accepted into the master of accountancy program at North Carolina State University and completed his master’s degree there. He was one of the 14 finalists for a full fellowship into that program.
