Fifth annual CHICKWEED ~ Celebrating Indestructible Women

4-11:59 p.m. Saturday July 23 at the F&M Trolley Barn, 125 E. Liberty St.

An indoor/outdoor concert and mini-festival, CHICKWEED features all female musicians and artists and raises funds and awareness for the Family Crisis Council of Rowan’s women’s shelter for victims of violence.

This year’s event features 12 music performers, two featured visual artists,  a spoken word artist, food and wine and beer available for purchase plus a silent auction and outdoor vendor court.

Pottery 101 hosts opening reception on Friday for ceramic artist  

Pottery 101 will host an opening reception on Friday, July 22, from 6-9 p.m. featuring the ceramic works of Gena VanDyke.

“Gena VanDyke’s work, while modern in finish, has an air of timelessness reminiscent of Asian and European designs. She credits the influence of artwork collected from around the world by her parents and grandparents. History has shown that clay objects have always been a part of our lives, whether for function or decoration. Even in today’s high tech world of computers and instant everything, Gena believes that clay can be a natural counterbalance. It invites us to connect and enjoy the comforting quality of the earth hand formed by another individual. She is proud to be a part of the continuing pottery tradition, forming each piece with patience and anticipation. Saturday: Historic Gold Hill Village Ghost Walk

GOLD HILL — Many tragedies occurred at Gold Hill during a century of gold mining history and the stories are documented in numerous publications.

Some of those accidents have resulted in ghost stories, many of which have been passed down retold through the years and make great campfire entertainment and lots of fun at Gold Hill’s Ghost Tour and Village Ghost Walk events.

This year’s event is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. Guides will lead visitors to each location to hear the tales of our local ghosts.

Tickets are $5 the night of the walk at the Arbor in the Village. St. Stephens Church Road.

NASACR race truck driver Jordan Anderson will speak at the men’s gathering at First Baptist Church of Salisbury on Sunday in the First Ministry Center (former YMCA building). Supper is at 5:30 p.m. followed by the program.

The Third Annual Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival will be held on Saturday, July 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Shrine Club on High Rock Lake (6480 Long Ferry Road).

“The Rowan Chamber is excited to bring this fun event back to our community for the third year,” said Ann Pressly (Trinity Oaks), chair of the Dragon Boat Festival Committee. “It highlights our quality of life with abundant water resources, friendly people and unique team building opportunities for businesses.”

The first year, 16 teams competed; the second year, 26 teams competed and more than 3,000 people attended. The event is free to attend; however, no pets, coolers or outside food will be allowed. There will be Dragon Boat races, food vendors, Cheerwine and United Beverages/Miller Beer. New Sarum Brewery will also have craft beer products available for sale and there will be recreation sporting equipment vendors.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and make it a fun lake party. Parking is free in the adjacent lots to the Shrine Club. The Salisbury/Rowan County Convention and Visitors Bureau will provide trolley rides to and from the parking areas.

At the end of the day on Saturday, Olympic style Gold/Silver/Bronze medals will be presented in the top three divisions and Gold in the fourth division.

Dragon Boat racing dates back to a more than 2,300-year-old tradition from ancient China. Sleek 45-foot boats adorned with dragon heads, tails and scales seat 20 paddlers. A drummer sits in the bow pounding the drum to the beat of the paddlers’ stroke, and a steersperson stands in the stern guiding the team down the race course.

The Chamber has again contracted with High Five Dragon Boat, which will provide each team with all the necessary equipment and teams learn how to paddle during an introductory practice session.

Salisbury Symphony announces auditions

The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra will hold auditions for principal cello, section strings, and any others who want to be on the orchestra’s substitute list. Music director David Hagy will hear auditions on Saturday, Sept. 3 in the Williams Music Building, Catawba College.

Auditionees will play a prepared piece of their choice, excerpts of the music director’s choice, and sight-reading.
