Area Sports Briefs: East wins all-star football game

The East All-Stars beat their West counterparts, 20-3, in the annual football game played in Greensboro on Wednesday.
The West team lost four turnovers.
Kacey Otto (West Rowan) rushed 13 times for 23 yards and was 3-for-10 passing for 59 yards in a defensive-minded game. Both teams were held to under 200 yards of offense.
The East held a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Ben Ellis (Davie) had two catches for 9 yards for the West squad.
A.L. Brown offensive lineman Cameron Peters and defensive lineman Dantrell Barkley were starters for the West team. Barkley was credited with three tackles.
The offensive MVP was East receiver Jaquay Mitchell. The defensive MVP was East lineman R-Kel Vera.
Attendance was 5,441.

College football
The CIAA annnounced its preseason poll and preseason All-CIAA team on Wednesday.
Livingstone was picked seventh overall and third in the Southern Division.
Livingstone sophomore defensive lineman Armond Cox was named to the All-CIAA preseason team.

Local golf
In U.S. Amateur sectional qualifying in Monroe, John Freeman of Asheville, NC shot 65-69 — 134 to finish 10-under.
He earned medalist honors and a ticket to the US Amateur Championship in Michigan.
Jeremy Grab of Daniel Island, S.C. shot 9-under for second place, and Chris Jones of Charlotte won a playoff the third and final berth.
Davis Richards (South Rowan, NC State) played well in the event, shooting 68-71 — to finish 5-under. Richards made five birdies and four bogeys during Wednesday’s second round. He tied for eighth.
Walker Cress (Concord, James Madison) shot 71-69 — 140 to finish 4-under. Cress made six birdies and three bogeys on Wednesday. Cress tied for 15th.

The Cardinal Amateur, a prestigious, 54-hole stroke play tournament, starts on Friday at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
The field includes 78 golfers, including Eric Edwards (Salisbury, George Mason).

Legion baseball
Host and Area IV champ Union County (26-2) has the best record of the eight teams in the American Legion state tournament that starts on Friday.
Rowan County (28-11) will play in Friday’s 4:30 p.m. game against Wilmington (20-2).
Some schedule changes for the first round were announced on Wednesday.

Union County Post 535 is in the state tournament for the first time and the tournament is being played at Wingate’s Ron Christopher Stadium for the first time. The stadium is named for the man who coached Wingate baseball for three decades and coached the Bulldogs to 536 victories.
The other seven teams joining Union County in the double-elimination tournament are familiar contenders and perennial powers. Area II champ Wilmington is in the state tournament for a record 10th time since the single-site, double-elimination format was used for the first time in 2000.
Rowan County is in the tournament for the ninth time. Caldwell County and Garner are making their eighth appearances. High Pointand Whiteville are in the tournament for the sixth time. This is the fifth visit for Pitt County.

Intimidators
LAKEWOOD, N.J.— Jose Pujols hit a run-scoring double in the sixth inning to lead the Lakewood BlueClaws to a 2-1 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Wednesday.
The double by Pujols, part of a two-run inning, broke a scoreless tie before Deivi Grullon hit an RBI single later in the inning.
Kannapolis answered in the top of the next frame when Grant Massey hit an RBI single, driving in Antonio Rodriguez to get within one.
Zach Morris struck Massey out with a runner on first to end the game for his fifth save of the season.

Knights
CHARLOTTE— Gary Sanchez hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, leading the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to a 14-2 romp over the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday.
The grand slam by Sanchez gave the RailRiders a 12-2 lead and capped a 12-run inning for Scranton/WB. Earlier in the inning, Scranton/WB took the lead when Ike Davis hit a two-run single and then scored on four more plays, including a two-run single by Pete Kozma.
Scranton/WB right-hander Luis Severino (7-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits over six innings.

Peeler update
Joe Peeler (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning in his most recent outing for the Mariners rookies in Arizona.

Salisbury soccer
Salisbury soccer camp will run July 25-29 from 9 until noon daily at the practice field adjacent to Salisbury High, behind the Wiley Apartments on New Street.
Any camper from any school, grades 8-12, male or female, is encouraged to attend. SHS coaches will preside. Cost of the camp is $65 and includes a T-shirt.
Campers are encouraged to bring a bottle of water, shin guards, and cleats, but do not need a ball.
Attendance at camp is not required to make the SHS varsity team.
Salisbury will have mandatory tryouts for the varsity soccer team the following week, Aug1-5.
Tryouts will run each day from 9 until noon at the practice field adjacent to SHS. An updated physical is required to play. Bottled water, shin guards and cleats are required.
Salisbury’s first contest is Aug. 15 at home vs. Albemarle. Game time is 6 p.m.
