A.L. Brown and Tennessee graduate Tavis Bailey made it through the first round in Thursday’s discus competition at the U.S.Olmpic Trials in Oregon.
Bailey’s third and final throw (197 feet, 5 inches) was his best effort of the night.
Bailey was sixth. Twelve of the 24 competitors advanced to today’s second round.
Three will make the Olympic team.
Bailey, a former A.L. Brown offensive lineman, went to Lenoir-Rhyne to play football before transferring to Tennessee to pursue his track and field dreams.
Bailey’s throw of 185 feet, 1 inch in 2010 as a senior at A.L.Brown is still the NCHSAA state record for the discus.

Local golf
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Salisbury’s Logan Shuping is competing in the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament here at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club.
Shuping, an East Rowan High School graduate who will be a freshman at East Carolina next month, had a tough first round yesterday, shooting a 6-over par 76. He is tied for 120th place.
Shuping needs to rebound today in order to make the cut, as the elite 168-player field gets reduced down for the weekend. He tees off this morning at 8:00, as the second round begins.
Arizona State recruit Ryan Douglass blistered the course on Thursday for a 6-under par 64 and has the first-day lead.
Walker Cress, a Concord High School graduate and incoming freshman at James Madison, is tied for 13th place after firing a 2-under par 68.
Pfeiffer’s Zach Weaver shot an even-par 70 and is in a tie for 27th place.
A total of 26 golfers are under par after the first round. Following Douglass with very low scores were Joey Lane (Virginia Tech), James Grierson (Australia) and Jack Musgrave (Georgetown) with 65s. Lenoir-Rhyne’s David Donovan IV and Timothy Colanta (Maryland) shot 4-under par 66s.

Legion baseball
Rain stopped several Legion contests on Thursday.
Randolph County’s game at Mocksville was rained out. The teams will try again tonight at Rich Park at 7 p.m.
High Point beat Winston-Salem, 5-3, to take a 2-0 lead in that best-of-five series.

Intimidators fall
GREENSBORO— Kyle Barrett hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, leading the Greensboro Grasshoppers to a 5-2 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday.
The home run by Barrett, part of a three-run inning, gave the Grasshoppers a 3-2 lead before Roy Morales hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
With the win, Greensboro remains undefeated (4-0) against Kannapolis this season.

Knights lose
CHARLOTTE— Mel Rojas hit two homers and drove in five runs, as the Gwinnett Braves defeated the Charlotte Knights 15-3 on Thursday.
Rojas hit a two-run shot in the fifth and then hit a three-run homer in the ninth off Matt Purke. Daniel Castro homered and singled, scoring three runs and driving in two.
