SALISBURY – Twenty-one Salisbury Academy alumni graduated from area high school programs.

Salisbury Academy has more than 285 alumni who have graduated since the first graduating class of 1998.

“Each year, as our alumni graduate from high school, it is wonderful to learn about their accomplishments and the exciting experiences ahead of them,” said Head of School Beverly Fowler.

Jonathan Barbee graduated from Salisbury High School where he served as vice president of the Student Government Association. Barbee is a National Honor Society member, a Crosby Scholar, a PTSA 2016 Apple Scholar, a STEM Academy Scholar with distinction, an academic honor graduate and was awarded the Outstanding Year one Cadet award from the JROTC. Barbee was active in clubs and athletics and was a scholar athlete in cross country for the year 2014-2015. Barbee plans to attend Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Amery Barton graduated from Jesse C. Carson High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society, the International Thespian Society and the Tri M Music Society. Barton is the recipient of the Prudential Spirit Award. She plans to attend Catawba College and has received a Presidential Scholarship, a music scholarship, and a theater scholarship from Catawba.

Robbie Bergstone graduated from Salisbury High School. Bergstone served as a junior marshall and junior rotarian, and was a National Honor Society member, a STEM Academy Scholar with Distinction, an AP Scholar and the president of Crosby Scholars at Salisbury High School. He was awarded the Gail Detty Yost Mathematics Award for being the top calculus BC student at his high school. Bergstone played football, ran track and played golf for all four years of high school. He was named MVP for throwing shotput in 2015 and All-CCC in track in 2016. Bergstone plans to attend the University of Alabama as an undeclared engineering major. The University of Alabama awarded Bergstone the Presidential Scholarship and Engineering Leadership Scholarship.

Emily Capito graduated from Salisbury High School where she was a state champion in tennis, and a member of the Student Government Association and homecoming court. Capito was an active member of the Young Life organization for all four years of high school. She was awarded the Coach’s Award for tennis her senior year. Capito plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Neel Chauhan graduated from Salisbury High School. Chauhan was a member of the National Honor Society and a STEM Academy Scholar with Distinction. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study business administration.

Jacob Crosby graduated from Salisbury High School. Crosby was a Crosby Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. Over the course of his high school career, Crosby played soccer, basketball and golf. He plans to attend East Carolina University with an intended major in sports marketing.

Heather Elizabeth Duncan graduated from Salisbury High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the John Brown Excellence in Writing award as well as the City of Salisbury’s Mayor’s Award for 2016. Duncan plans to attend Catawba College to pursue a career teaching English. She hopes to publish her first novel, “Seven Sonnets from a Toad,” this year.

Delphia Henderson graduated from Salisbury High School. Henderson was a STEM Academy Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society, a Crosby Scholar Graduate and completed nursing fundamentals coursework. Henderson is the recipient of an academic scholarship from Lenoir Rhyne University, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Scholarship, the Hairston Funeral Home Scholarship, the PTSA Apple Fund Scholarship, the Bethel Enrichment Center Scholarship and the 2016 American Red Cross Scholarship. She plans to attend Lenoir Rhyne University.

Robyn James graduated from Jesse C. Carson High School where he was a Crosby Scholar. James received a certificate of outstanding leadership as a Salisbury Youth Council member and volunteered in neighborhood clean-up efforts for Habitat for Humanity, BlockWorks and the Historic Salisbury Foundation. James tutored elementary kids and manned the box office for the Salisbury Symphony. He has either lived in or visited a total of 28 countries and because of this plans to major in international business. James plans to attend Catawba College.

Ann Fisher Lindsay graduated cum laude from Cannon School. Fisher was a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, the Rho Kappa Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the National Spanish Honor Society and was a recipient of the Presidential Service Award. She plans to attend Wake Forest University.

Christal Marts earned her high school equivalence degree and is currently attending community college in Portland, Ore. In addition to her classwork, Marts enjoys her work at a sushi restaurant.

Sam McNeely graduated from Salisbury High School where he was recognized for Excellence in Latin II and III and European History. McNeely was All-Conference for cross country in his senior year, and his team was three-time cross country conference champions during his time there. McNeely was MVP of his freshman and sophomore basketball teams as well as a church league basketball champion. He plans to attend N.C. State University.

Tyler Peoples graduated from East Rowan High School. Peoples was a Junior Civitan, a Crosby Scholar, and served as videographer for the varsity boys’ basketball team. He plans to attend Western Carolina University in the fall.

John Miles Robinson graduated from Salisbury High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society and a Crosby Scholar. Robinson played three sports for all four years of high school and ended as fourth on the golf team after only playing for two years. Robinson received his Eagle Scout award as a freshman and is active with his youth group at St. John’s Lutheran Church. He plays the guitar and piano. Robinson plans to attend Eastern Carolina University.

Harrison Smith graduated from Salisbury High School. Smith was a member of the National Honor Society, a four-year letter in football and baseball, a Crosby Scholar, a Windsor Eagle Scholar and a PTSA Scholar. Smith plans to attend Furman in the fall and will play baseball there. From Furman he received the Bell Tower Scholarship and the Furman Academic Grant.

Grace Steinman graduated from Salisbury High School as co-valedictorian. Steinman was a STEM Academy Scholar with Distinction from 2012 – 2016, a member of the National Honor Society, an Advanced Placement Scholar, a North Carolina Scholar Athlete, a Crosby Scholar, a junior rotarian, a member of the Key Club and Junior Civitans, secretary for the Student Government Association, executive vice chair of the finance committee for Salisbury Youth Council and an active member of First Presbyterian Church. Steinman founded a backpack/food pantry to provide food weekly for hungry students at Salisbury High School, and was an All-Conference, All-Region and All-State tennis player. She is a Morehead-Cain Scholarship nominee at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill in the fall to major in biology.

Boyd Temple graduated from Gray Stone Day School where he played basketball and soccer. He received an academic scholarship to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), an internationally-recognized program. Temple plans to attend SCAD in the fall as an industrial design major.

Sam Uliana graduated from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Kernersville. Uliana was a member of the National Honor Society, the Principal’s List, the National Art Honor Society and received national recognition for achieving an overall four-year GPA of greater than 3.5. She was an All-Conference, All-Region member and captain of the girls’ varsity soccer team. Uliana is a University of Alabama Capstone Scholar, a Chowan University President Scholar and was awarded the Ferrum College Scholarship, the Roanoke College Scholarship, the Stetson College Scholarship, the University of South Carolina Scholarship, the Auburn University Scholarship and the University of Mississippi Scholarship. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee.

Laura Weber graduated from Gray Stone Day School where she was a member of the Spanish National Honor Society as well as a Scholar Athlete. Weber plans to attend East Carolina University in the fall with a major in hospitality management. Her future plans are to get an master’s in business administration and work for Disney.

Matt Washko graduated from Salisbury High School as co-valedictorian. Washko was an AP Scholar with Distinction, an All-County Scholar, a two-time soccer state champion, a STEM Scholar with Distinction, a junior rotarian, a member of the National Honor Society and an N.C. Scholar. He was All-Conference in cross country and track and All-County in cross country. Washko was awarded the Excellence in Community Service Award, the Rotary Club Outstanding Athlete Award, the Jack Campbell Award for the Highest GPA with over six varsity letters and the Jack Turney Award for two or more sports per year for all four years. He plans to attend the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as part of their honors program, and plans to study either biology or chemistry.

Grace Yatawara graduated from Salisbury High School as salutatorian. Yatawara was the recipient of the Mayor’s Award and the United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, and was a STEM Scholar with Distinction, an All-County Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar. She was the 2014 and 2015 NCHSAA 1A/2A Individual State Champion in golf, the 2014 North Carolina Junior Champion in golf and the U.S. Junior Girls’ Qualifier in 2014. Yatawara plans to attend East Carolina University to major in biomedical engineering.
