Plein Air Artists from throughout North Carolina are coming to town for the second annual NC Open Plein Air Paint Out on Aug. 12-14.

What is “Plein Air”? It is French and translates to “In the open air.” Artists set up their easels, in the tradition of the Impressionists, and paint what they see. This painting form has become very popular and we affectionately refer to it as the “new golf.”

With the assistance of the Waterworks Visual Arts Center, Plein Air Carolina has been planning for this grand event for a year. Eighteen distinctive sites have been selected for artists.

Barbara Duffy, our resident graphic designer and fellow plein air painter, designed our logo.

The judge for this year’s show is artist Chad Smith. He is traveling from Durham to judge from noon to 2 p.m. on Aug. 14.

First place is the Sarah Kellogg Award of $1000, second place, donated by Fisher Realty and Fisher Construction is $500 and third place is donated by Fine Frame Gallery, $250. A number of other awards will be presented.

Several local sponsors are assisting to make this an impressive experience.

Plein Air Carolina (PAC) is an organization of regional painters based in Rowan County. We meet once a week at sites throughout the region. We are well aware of the unique painting opportunities available locally.

Rowan’s history and Piedmont natural features are a feast for artists. For example, we boast the Transportation Museum, Catawba College, the Brown House, the Bullhole, historic farms and Rowan Museum. Last year we heard that visiting artists “barely scratched the surface.” There is generous art material here!

Artists at all ages and levels are encouraged to participate. The event will provide opportunities for aspiring young and interested adult painters to work alongside the region’s most successful working artists. All participants will receive information and favors at registration.

To enter, go to the Waterworks Visual Arts Center, or visit it online at www.waterworks.com. Adult registration fee is $25 and student’s fee is $5. For more information go to www.pleinaircarolina.com .

On Sunday, Aug. 14, artists will display their paintings at the F&M Trolley Barn. The Show will be open to the public from 2-4 p.m.
