Catawba College psychology professor presents at conference

Dr. Amy Holmes, visiting assistant professor of psychology at Catawba College, presented her work at the Eastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology (ETOP) June 24-25th in Staunton, Va. Her presentation was entitled:  “A (Relatively) Painless Approach to Online Psychology Course Creation”  Her work focuses on how to put research into practice by presenting examples and guidelines to follow when creating online courses, and the relationship between effective online courses and student success.

Cabarrus College named number one best small college in North Carolina

Earlier this month, Cabarrus College of Health Sciences was named the #1 Best Small College in North Carolina by Zippia, a company dedicated to providing tools to improve career outcomes for everyone. Data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) (http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/datacenter/Data.aspx) and College Scorecard data (https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/data/) was used in creating this top ten list. Some of the data used included:

• Career earnings after six and ten years
• Ratio of people working to not working after ten years
• Admissions Rate
• Graduation Rate
• Average Cost of Attendance

Cabarrus College topped the list by having graduates earn the second highest salaries in the state for all small colleges. The college also boasts a 31 percent admission rate, indicating a selective admissions process, and also has the third lowest cost.

Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, a member of the North Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities organization, focuses on health sciences education and offers master, bachelor, and associate degrees as well as diplomas, certificates, and continuing education on a non-residential campus in Concord. Golden LEAF scholars

The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority recently selected Jamia Angle, of West Rowan High School; Kristina Everhart, of Gray Stone Day School; Claudia Patterson, of West Rowan High School and India Witherspoon, of North Rowan Hight as recipients of up to a $12,000 Golden LEAF Foundation Scholarship.

The students are among 215 students selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship each year for up to four years of study at a participating NC public university or private non-profit college or university. Recipients are from rural, economically distressed North Carolina counties and are selected based on a number of criteria, including a review of school and community service activities, goals, and expressed intent to contribute to rural communities upon graduation from college.

The Golden LEAF Foundation created the Golden LEAF Scholarship program to broaden educational opportunities and provide support to students from rural counties, with the hope that after graduation, recipients will provide leadership in these communities.

Clemson University

Joshua M. Hawk of China Grove was named to the Dean’s List at Clemson University. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student achieved a grade-point average between 3.50 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Rachel Patricia Jones, Benton T. Kribbs and Joshua Michael Rowell, all of Salisbury, were named to the President’s List at Clemson University. To be named to the President’s List, a student must achieve a 4.0 (all As) grade-point average.

Georgia Institute of Technology

William Overcash, of Salisbury, was named to the Dean’s List at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This designation is awarded to undergraduate students who have a 3.0 or higher academic average for the semester.

Spirit of Atlanta

This year, Shelby Lowe, a graduate of East Rowan High School, has been selected to join Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps for its 40^th anniversary season, as a member of this elite competitive group. Out of hundreds of young and talented musicians that have auditioned to join the corps for the 2016 season, all ages 15-22, this musician was selected to be a performer for the 2016 edition of Spirit of Atlanta. One hundred and fifty members are chosen each years based on musical talent, athletic skills, and passion for performing. Above all, they must exhibit the attitude needed to complete a challenging, and high quality artistic program.

Spirit of Atlanta is a member of Drum Corps International (DCI), which is a governing body facilitating summer educational events, performances, and competitions. Spirit of Atlanta is proudly representing their city at more than 20 competitions and exhibitions across the country for an audience of over 300,000 fans. The corps members will be traveling thousands of miles across the USA, working hard to inspire thousands of people through the mediums of music, showmanship and dance.

Spirit of Atlanta Director, Chris Moore states, “The performing members we have selected are at the top of their game. The character they exude, dedication and hard work will be fine tuned skills they will carry for the rest of their lives.”

Local student signs onto rodeo

Zach Toberer from Mount Ulla has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete on the Mesalands Community College Rodeo Team, in Tucumcari, N.M., for the 2016-2017 season. Toberer will be majoring in Animal Science and is a recipient of the Mesalands Stampede Rodeo Scholarship. The Mesalands Rodeo Team competes throughout the Grand Canyon Region in National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) competitions.

The Mesalands Rodeo Team will host their ninth Annual Mesalands Intercollegiate Fall Rodeo on Oct. 14-15, 2016 at the Quay County Rodeo Arena.

St. Marks Lutheran Church

In the first part of June, St. Marks Lutheran Church in Christ presented three students with scholarships.

Allison Von Canon was presented with one of the William J. Shulenburger Scholarships. Allison, the daughter of Perry and Kris Von Canon is enrolled in Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She plans to major in business management and accounting and will transfer in the fall to a four-year institution.

Mack Flanagan was also presented with a William J. Shulenburger Scholarship. Mach, the son of Robert and Maria Flanagan is enrolled at the University of St. Thomas. He will graduate after the fall semester with a degree in financial planning. Mack is currently working this summer for Edward Jones as an intern and hopes to become a financial adviser.

Daniel Flanagan was presented with a Carmon A. Wilson Scholarship. Daniel, the son of Robert and Maria Flanagan is enrolled at N.C. State. he plans to obtain a degree in agronomy from N.C. State University. Daniel would like to become a soil scientist for the State of North Carolina.
