SALISBURY —The State Employees Credit Union members, by way of the SECU Foundation, have presented six scholarship to area seniors as part of its “People Helping People” scholarship opportunity.

• A $5,000 two-year college scholarship was presented to Aunika Skye Allen, a senior at Rowan County Early College. This scholarship was awarded for study at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, part of North Carolina’s 17-campus University of North Carolina System.
• A $10,000 four-year college scholarship was presented to to Ashley Brooke Mayhew, a senior at East Rowan High School. The scholarship was awarded for study at University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
• A $10,000 four-year college scholarship was presented to Miyahka Danette Farris, a senior at Salisbury High School. The scholarship was awarded for study at University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
• A $10,000 four-year college scholarship was presented to Shirley Ann Trayah, a senior at Jesse C. Carson High School. The scholarship was awarded for study at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
• A $10,000 four-year college scholarship was presented to Phillip Martin, Jr, a senior at North Rowan High School. The scholarship was awarded for study at Appalachian State University.
• A $10,000 four-year college scholarship was presented to Grace Vivian Harrell, a senior at West Rowan High School. The scholarship was awarded for study at University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Funded solely by Credit Union members and given based on SECU’s philosophy of “People Helping People,” the scholarship recognizes the recipient’s community involvement, leadership skills, character and integrity, as well as scholastic achievement. The scholarship is provided for tuition and university approved educational expenses over four consecutive semesters.

State Employees’ Credit Union’s local Advisory Board member Wendy Barnhardt comments, “Through the SECU Foundation ‘People Helping People’ Scholarship program, Credit Union members have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many North Carolina high school seniors, helping them pursue and fulfill their educational goals through the University of North Carolina System.”

Since its inception in 2005, the SECU Foundation “People Helping People” High School Scholarship program has provided over $44 million in scholarships for North Carolina high school seniors.
