Area Sports Briefs: Morgan leads qualifying for Rowan Masters

Andrew Morgan shot a 70 to lead qualifying for the Rowan Masters at Warrior Golf Club on Saturday.
Michael Childress and 2013 champion Phil Miller shot 71s.
The top 32 qualified for match play. Tee times will be announced on Monday.

Matt Hardman, who won the Rowan Masters in 2014 and 2015 has turned pro, so he won’t be defending his title. The former Catawba star won a GPro Tour event recently at Mimosa Hills. He shot 64-66 — 130 and won $4,100.

U.S. Open
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III played his final five holes in the U.S. Open on Saturday with four pars and a bogey. He shot 76-75 — 151 at Oakmont, 11-over.
Adams missed the cut. The cutline was 6-over.
Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson also were among those who didn’t make the cut.

Legion baseball
Kannapolis won at Mooresville, 4-3, in 11 innings on Saturday.
Daniel O’Kelly was the winning pitcher, while Jacob Tuttle earned a save.
Bo Corriher, Hunter Travis and Blake Johnson paced Kannapolis’ offense.

State Games
The Region 6 team that includes East Rowan’s John Owen, West Rowan’s Austin Love and Carson’s Owen White is unbeaten and advanced to today’s Gold Medal game in Cary.

Sands update
Jerry Sands (Catawba) went 0-for-4 for the Charlotte Knights on Saturday but scored a run.

Prep softball
West Rowan’s Parker Greene and Peyton Greene were named to the 3A All-District 6 team.

A.L. Brown placed five players on the 4A All-District 6 team: Kaitlin Moore, Kaylee Cook, Brandi Blackmon, Ashlynn Stokes and Allie Baker.
Moore was named region player of the year.

Davie placed six players on the 4A All-District 7 team: Bridgett Tierney, Olivia Boger, McKenzie Barneycastle, Mackenzie Smith, Sierra Ferguson and Anna Devereaux.
Boger was named region pitcher of the year.

Gray Stone’s Alyssa Herlocker, Madison Hunter and Ashlyn Kennedy were named to the 1A All-District 6 team.

Intimidators lose
Jose Pujols hit a grand slam as Lakewood pounded Kannapolis, 9-1, on Saturday at First Energy Park.
Max Dutto made his debut for Kannapolis after being selected by the Chicago White Sox in the ninth round of the recent draft. He had his first pro hit and scored on a single by Landon Lassiter.
The Intimidators wrap up their road trip today.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation baseball camp will be held at Salisbury High on June 20-23, 9 until noon. Cost $30. Ages 8-14.
