SALISBURY — One man is OK and another is in jail following a shooting that occurred late Saturday night.

Joshua Alexander Hovis, a 29-year-old Salisbury resident, was arrested on a number of gun- and drug-related charges following the shooting. The charges include possession of a weapon by a felon; possession of a scheduled two controlled substance; possession of a schedule two controlled substance with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute; possession of a schedule four controlled substance; carrying a concealed gun; assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police department spokesperson Shelia Lingle said Hovis’ charges came after he was allegedly involved in a shooting on Saturday. Warrants state the victim’s name is Christopher Shepherd. Lingle said the victim “is OK.”

Hovis remained in jail Sunday afternoon under a $200,000 bond.

When police arrested Hovis, he allegedly possessed a set of scales, a 9 mm gun and 8 grams of a substance suspected to be crack cocaine.

Hovis’ possession of a weapon by a felon charge comes from a 2008 incident, when Hovis was charged with possession of a schedule two controlled substance with intent to sell and deliver. He was convicted of the charge in 2009 and sentenced to 10 months in prison.

Hovis has a lengthy criminal record that includes a number of drug-related charges, multiple trespassing charges, assault and larceny.
