Scott Young, who directed West Rowan’s football program to 172 wins, three state championships and nine conference titles in 17 seasons, had heart transplant surgery on Saturday.
Young has dealt with health issues since a heart attack in the fall of 2011.
Young, 44, has been on the waiting list for a new heart since March, 2015. He’d been moved to the 1A priority list recently.
He received a call at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The operation took place at Charlotte’s Carolinas Medical Center and was completed on Saturday afternoon.
Young’s wife, Dianne, said in a text message that “surgery went well and the heart looks good.” She said Young, who was hired recently as the head coach at Charlotte Independence was in stable condition.
Doctors will perform follow-up procedures today.
Recovery is expected to take six to eight weeks.
The hope is that Young will be on the field when Independence begins official football practice in early August.
Young started working with his new team when spring drills began on May 16.
Independence assistant coaches, including Jeremy Ryan, a former A.L. Brown assistant, will handle the final days of spring football practice next week.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators came from behind to beat the Asheville Tourists, 5-4, on Saturday.
Massey went 3-for-6.
The Intimidators (20-29) collected 14 hits and brought their streak of 10 or more hits in a game to four.
Massey was one of five Intimidators with a multi-hit night joining Danny Mendick, Landon Lassiter, Bradley Strong, and Frank Califano to tally at least two hits.
The Intimidators wrap up the four-game series against the Tourists on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.

Weddington gets two first half goals and holds off Jacksonville 2-1 for the 3A state championships.

Community School of Davidson jumped on top of Franklin Academy in the opening minute and went on to a 5-1 victory in the 1A state championship game.

Providence held off Middle Creek, 2-1, to win the 4A state title.
Providence closed the season 25-1-1 on the year, winning the school’s second state title in the sport.

Junior Legion
Carson rolled 14-3 against Stanly to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Brycen Holshouser had two hits and drove in four runs for Carson.
Karson Beacham had two hits and two RBIs. Garrett Alewine had two hits. Cole Hales had two RBIs.
Matthew Donahue was the winning pitcher with relief help from Jaxon Miller.
Carson is off until Tuesday when it travels to play Kannapolis at Northwest Cabarrus.
