SPENCER — The Rowan Doll Society (RDS) hosted a Junior Collector meeting on Saturday, May 21. The event was held at the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum.

Thirteen young girls attended the fun and casual meeting. RDS club member Nancy May took the girls on a trip around the world through several great stories, a song and she even shared a creative rap about Little Red Riding Hood. She used a map and push pins to indicate where the countries she was reading about were located.

Beth Nance,a founder of the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum and a RDS club member, entertained the girls with a tour of the museum and a short program on Caroline Abbott, an American Girl who lived during the War of 1812.

Kathryn Matthews and Helen Thomas, both active RDS club members, served the attendees afternoon refreshments including fruit cups and bakery-style chocolate chip cookies. Each girl received a door prize. Izzy, one lucky 11 year old, won an 18-inch American Girl doll who came complete with clothes, a carry case and American Girl sized twin bed.

Wayne Thomas, RDS treasurer served as official photographer.

Junior Collectors are the doll collectors of the future, and the Rowan Doll Society would like to encourage education and collecting for young children. The club will host a Jr. Collectors meeting four times a year.

Dunbar High School 50th class reunion 

EAST SPENCER — The Class of 1966 of Dunbar High School will be celebrating its 50th class reunion on Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4.

On that Friday there will be a memorial service and gospel concert from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1570 N. Long St. (Long Ferry Road). This service is in remembrance of the deceased classmates and all family members of the deceased, friends and classmates are invited to the service and concert.

On Saturday the activities are private for classmates, guests, special friends and teachers.

 

Miller reunion

Descendents of Ernest E. and Agatha Eller Miller held their 49th family reunion at Dan Nicholas Park on Saturday, May 21. A covered dish lunch was held for 16 family members and two guests, Sawyer Russell from Gold Hill and Tracey Bishop from Spartanburg, S.C.

Also in attendance was one of the surviving children, Zeta Miller Smith from Salisbury; Ernest E. Miller from Cary was not able to attend this year. The deceased children are Amy R. Miller, Olivia Miller File, Coy R. Miller, Rena Miller Morris, Edgar A. Miller, Pauline Miller Leazer and James J. Miller.

President of the reunion committee, Don Smith of Huntersville, recognized the following family members with a gift:

Oldest member present-: Zeta Miller Smith, 89 years young from Salisbury.

Youngest member present: Emma Shores, age 6, from Morganton, daughter of Jonathan and Angela Shores, granddaughter of Don and Shirley Smith, great-granddaughter of Zeta Miller Smith.

Family with most members present: Zeta Miller Smith with 11 members and one vistor.

Traveled farthest: Luann Earnhardt Bryant, from Spartanburg, S.C., 120 miles.

No new members were added to the Miller family since last year’s reunion.

Officers elected for the 2017 reunion were: president: David Smith, Huntersville; vice president: Angela Shores, Morganton; secretary: Zeta Smith, Salisbury; treasurer: Pat Floyd, Salisbury.

The 50th reunion will be held next on June 17, 2017 at Dan Nicholas Park. This will be a milestone for the family and will have some great activities planned. The family had its first reunion in 1967 with the Rev. Coy Miller in Union, S.C.

 

Swing ‘fore’ Strings tournament

Friends of the Symphony will host an afternoon of golf at the Country Club of Salisbury on Friday, June 24. Registration begins at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Entry fee per golfer is $90.
