Cabarrus College of Health Sciences
On Friday, April 22 Cabarrus College inducted 17 new members into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. To be eligible to join, students must have a 3.25 grade point average.
Phi Theta Kappa recently recognized the college chapter as the number one chapter in the nation in membership acceptance. The membership acceptance rate has risen to 91 percent, and since November 1996 there have been 853 members added to the Cabarrus College chapter.
The new inductees are: Jessica Baldwin, Stephanie Ball, Jessica Ballesteros, Dylan Bossard, Kayla Currie, Anna DeDiemar, Kaitlyn Easley, Melissa Engard-Berger, Kristen Hucks, Taylor Leverick, Jessica Mejia, Lindsey Owen, Kayla Poole, Kadie Pritchard, Tricia VanGastle, Alexis Weaver and Kayce Wilson.

Davidson County Community College announced the spring 2016 Golden LEAF Scholars. Eight students from Davie, Randolph and Stanly counties have received scholarships from the Golden LEAF Foundation. Five of the students are enrolled in the curriculum program and three are occupational education students. The students and their courses of study are as follows:
Curriculum Students: Michelle Barrier, Associate in Arts; Krystle Beal, practical nurse education; Jessica Martin, medical assisting; Stephanie Reece, practical nurse education and Tocarra Steele, practical nurse education
Occupational education students:Hannah Hendrix, nurse assistant I; Anlly Gisselle Hernandez, nurse assistant I; Lillian Thornburg nurse assistant I
The Golden LEAF Foundation provides scholarships to students in qualifying counties, who demonstrate financial need, to help them attend college at participating North Carolina public or private institutions or community colleges.
Carl Simmons was named to the Louisburg College Honors List for spring semester. To be named to the Honors List, a student must have completed at least 12 or more hours of college credit in a given semester and have a semester grade point average between 3.0 and 3.49.
Merit Scholar
William L. Jones, a homeschool student in Salisbury, was awarded a National Merit Scholarship of $2,500.
National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
Carson-Newman University
The following Carson-Newman University students made Dean’s List for the spring 2016 semester: Tori Gaul, of Gold Hill, and Marshall Shank, of Salisbury.
Students earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher while taking 12 or more credit hours are awarded the distinction of Dean’s List honors.
NCCAT
Jennifer J. Blume of North Rowan High School and Alesha S. Roseman of Carroll T. Overton Elementary School recently attended programs held at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, a professional development program for the state’s teachers.
Several area educators attended solution and planning team programs. The programs offer educators an opportunity to meet in a residential setting devoid of distraction to create and advance departmental, school, or district-wide projects.
Participating educators from Rowan-Salisbury Schools included Juli A. Alfieri, Dellarene S. Myers, Melissa A. Root, Joshua J. Sherrill and Joretta L. Sterner of Elizabeth Duncan Koontz Elementary School.
