The Carolina Artists meet tonight
The Carolina Artists will meet Thursday, May 19 this evening at 7 p.m. at Rufty Holmes Center. At this month’s program artist Janet Isenhour will demonstrate painting on reflective surfaces — a technique using alcohol based transparent colors. This is free and visitors are welcome.

Let’s Get Connected Day
SPENCER — The annual Let’s Get Connected Day is Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Spencer Library Park, 300 4th St.
The Multicultural Celebration and Dedication of 10th Peace Pole will feature music, dance, a circle of prayer, children’s activities and a free hotdog lunch. Bring lawn chairs.

‘Friends and Family’ art showcase and reception at SBC
The Salisbury Business Center is collaborating with local artists to display an array of artwork in a variety of mediums.
Through Aug. 1, several artists are showcasing their artwork, including student artists from the Salisbury Art Station as well as seasoned artists such as Guy Raymond, Bailey Wingler, Patt Legg, Hope Holmes, Amber Poteat, Mark Riley, Sue McHugh, Ethan Strickland, Don Moore, Keyth Kars and more.
A reception will be held next Thursday, May 26, from 6-8 p.m., at the Center. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibition is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All artwork is available for purchase from the artists and information is available at the receptionist area.

Be a vendor at Chickweed
Looking for art and craft vendors for the 5th annual Chickweed, Celebrating Indestructible Women.
Chickweed will be held July 23 at the Trolley Barn from 3–11 p.m.
The festival features multiple performances by female musicians and female fronted bands. All proceeds got to support the Family Crisis Council’s work with battered women and the battered women’s shelter.

Salisbury Altrusa Club 4th Annual Summer Reading Festival
When: Saturday, May 21, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., (use lower level entrance on Jackson St.)
There will be story telling by the Phoenix Readers, story writing, and face painting in addition to other fun activities. All children age 12 and under will be given a free book.
Several children’s book authors will be present with their books available for sale.
This family-oriented event is the Salisbury Altrusa Club’s primary literacy project and is made possible through generous donations from the Friends of Rowan Public Library as well as individual donations, all given through the Altrusa District Three Foundation.

Armed Forces Day at MRV

Family Day At Happy’s Farm postponed to May 28
Happy’s Farm, 985 Parks Road, will be dedicating two new farm attractions to local veterans on Saturday, May 28, and the park will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Salute to Freedom Tunnel and Rodney’s Train Depot will be dedicated and all proceeds go to Happy’s Farm HERO Veteran Project.

Rowan Rose Show

Rowan Rose Society’s 57th annual Rose Show will be held in the former J.C. Penney building at 1935 Jake Alexander Blvd. West, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. Previously, the Rose Show has been open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. This year, the Show will be open on Saturday afternoon only, so please plan to atten on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Show will feature hundreds of rose blooms including the large flowered hybrid teas that everyone loves as well as new varieties, fragrant old roses and miniature roses. A special display will contain award winners from each class, including Queen of the Show.
Since this is a Carolina District Show, there will be exhibitors from all parts of North Carolina and South Carolina. This wide variety of roses offers an excellent opportunity to select favorites to grow in your own garden. Society members will be present to advise on best practices for gorwing roses. Membership in the Rowan Rose Society, normally $20, will be available at half price.
In addition to displays of individual roses, a large selection will be devoted to a variety of beautiful flower arrangements emphasizing the use of roses.
All area rose growers are welcome to enter roses between 5:30 and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
At the close of the Show on Saturday, show roses will be sold with proceeds to benefit the American Rose Society. For more information, call Clyde Harriss at 704-633-7024.
