Area Sports Briefs: More honors for Tysinger

Catawba senior softball pitcher Carley Tysinger has been named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association Softball All-Southeast Region team and to the College Sports Information Directors of America All-District softball team.
Tysinger becomes a four-time first team all-region pick by CoSIDA. She finished her career with 1,355 strikeouts which ranked eighth in NCAA II. This season, she set a school and conference record with 413 strikeouts and also notched a Catawba record with 32 wins in helping the Lady Indians to their second straight conference tournament title.
The senior logged 297 innings and surrendered 196 hits, allowing opponents to hit for just a .181 average. Tysinger had a 1.04 ERA, threw 10 shutouts and twirled a no-hitter against Brevard.
Academically, Tysinger has a 3.72 GPA while majoring in chemistry. It is the third time she has been named to the academic all-district squad.

Prep soccer
Carson ended the season with a 5-1 loss at Southwestern Randolph (18-1-1) in the first round of the 3A state playoffs on Wednesday.
Cierra Josey scored the goal for Carson (8-11-2). Megan Bolick made 16 saves in her final game for the Cougars.
Gray Stone
Gray Stone (19-1) defeated Walkertown , 9-0, in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.
Annie Habeeb had two assists and two goals. Laurie Fogleman and Kate Sullivan scored two goals each.
Wesley Harrington and Steffi Dejak added goals, and Ivy Ivy Overcash added an assist and a goal.
The Knights play Thursday at home against Queens Grant at 7 p.m.
Hornets
Salisbury will play at top-seeded Forbush in the second round of the 2A playoffs on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $6.

Prep softball
A.L. Brown will host Olympic at 7 p.m. tonight in the second round of the 4A state playoffs.

East Rowan ended the season with a 5-4 loss to West Iredell in a first-round 3A game on Tuesday.
Salisbury ended the season on Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at Owen.

SPC tournament champ Cox Mill rolled, 12-2, on Wednesday against Central Davidson in a 3A first-round matchup.
Asheville AC Reynolds beat Central Cabarrus, 8-7, on Tuesday.
SPC regular-season champ Hickory Ridge lost to Western Guilford, 8-3.

SAC
Wingate won the 2015-16 SAC Echols Athletic Excellence Award. Wingate won five SAC Championships.
Queens was second, with Carson-Newman third and Lenoir-Rhyne fourth.
Catawba placed seventh.

College baseball
Surry Community College’s Ross Hoffner (Davie) has signed a letter of commitment to play baseball for the Montreat.

Local golf
Michael Hammill recently had a hole-in-one at Corbin Hills Golf Club.
Hammill, playing with Billy Rollins, aced the 156-yard No. 2 hole, using a 7-iron.
