Annual Simple Living Festival at Dan Nicholas on Saturday
The annual Simple Living Festival on Saturday includes music, crafts and special nature programs at Dan Nicholas Park in front of the nature center, as well as special activities for the children. Admission is free. The Festival will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with music from noon-4 p.m. Paintings done by our own animals will be on display and for sale and there will be bear feeding and trail walks — family fun for all!

Gold Hill Gold Rush Days Saturday
GOLD HILL — On Saturday, step back in time and join the folks in the Historic Village of Gold Hill for Gold Rush Days from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Local artists and craft persons will be displaying and selling their work throughout the village. In addition to the quaint village shops, café and bakery, there will be gold panning, live music, and the Airing of the Quilts to enjoy throughout the day. Grand unveiling Friday downtown for the 2016 pianos

Back by popular demand, and having grown in size, TEN pianos, this time magically transformed by our public and private middle schools and Early College, are ready for the street. Tomorrow, May 6, during Downtown Salisbury’s First Friday Night Out, the pianos will be formally unveiled at 5:30 p.m., with student musicians serenading the public. Here’s what awaits you:

RSS & Salisbury Symphony present ‘Musicals’
Showcasing Rowan County talent in the orchestra’s final concert of its season, “Musicals” presents the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and several high school students performing in the pops concert on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Keppel Auditorium.
Marvin Scruggs, alto sax, Katie Howard with her trumpet, and Spencer Byrd on trombone, are all from East High School. Sarah Jane McCourt, a junior at West High School, will perform on her flute; and Tori Isenhour, from Carson High School, will sing. Kevin Agner, a student at Greystone, will perform on his cello. Junior doll collectors meeting coming up
SPENCER — The Jr. Collectors meeting, sponsored by the Rowan Doll Society, is Saturday, May 21 from 2-4 p.m. at the Spencer Doll and Toy Museum, 108 Fourth St. The fun and casual get-together will include story time, a short program on American Girl, refreshments, and door prizes. One lucky attendee will receive an 18-inch American Girl doll. The Rowan Doll Society would like to encourage education and collecting for young children. Annual Rose Show in new location May 21
The Rowan Rose Society’s annual Rose Show will be held in the former J.C. ‘Shipwrecked! An Entertainment: The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself)’
Louis de Rougemont was a real person — at least, he was the pen name of a real person. At the end of the 19th century, he began to write about his exploits, including searching for gold in New Guinea, living in the outback of Australia for 30 years, and riding sea turtles. Were his adventures real or a work of fiction? You’ll have to decide for yourself…

Battle Mode Majorette Dance Competition
From 1-6 p.m. on May 14 majorette dance teams from Va., S.C. and N.C. compete for a chance to win a total of $1000 and trophies. Uwharrie Players performance includes familiar PPT faces
ALBEMARLE — The Uwharrie Players will present “Godspell” and the audience will choose the ticket price. The Uwharrie Players have been a Stanly County arts fixture for more than 40 years, but this time they are trying something new: admission will be by donation only.
Cast member Christian Payne recently graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in Theatre Arts. The cast also includes several faces familiar to Piedmont Players’ audiences: Nick Culp, Lizzie Medlin, Alexa Hendrickson and Caroline Stephenson. WINSTON-SALEM — The Triad Dog Games are May 14-15 at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. This third annual fundraising event for The Sergei Foundation raises funds to help sick and injured pets obtain emergency veterinary care. Attendees can compete or spectate at this high-energy event.
Competitions include dock jumping, disc (frisbee), agility, Dachshund races — and new for 2016 is a sanctioned flyball competition. Triad Dog Games is the first and only dog event of its kind in the Triad to include all major sport dog activities in a weekend of fun for the whole family, both human and canine.
