City of Salisbury hosts Coffee with a Cop — 9-10 a.m. First and third Tuesdays at Koco Java • Second and fourth Tuesdays at Mean Mug. Ask questions, voice concerns, get to know your neighborhood officers. Free.
City of Salisbury hosts Meetings with the Manager — 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays after the first City Council meeting, City Hall, first floor. Drop by to speak with the City Manager in an open forum. Free.
City of Salisbury hosts Barbershops and Cops —First Thursdays at Majestic Creations, 2 p.m. • First Fridays at Man Made, 1 p.m. • Second Thursdays at B&B Expressions, 11 a.m. • Fourth Thursdays at Addison’s, 1 p.m. • Get to know your neighborhood’s police officers at your local barbershop. Free.

PGT Toastmasters hosts open house today
This evening at 5:30 p.m., People Growing Together Toastmasters will host an open house event at Hurley YMCA on Jake Alexander Blvd., featuring International Director Russell Drake, author of “If This Is a Secret Why Am I Telling It.” In this one-hour presentation, Drake will share techniques to overcome nervousness, connect with any audience, use verbal and non-verbal communication skills, eliminate filler words and distractions, and achieve a commanding executive presence. The presentation begins at 6 p.m. Admission is free but seating is limited; RSVP to Glenda Edwards at 828-310-8491.
Bread Riot presents Bernhardt Back Porch Burger Bash
Enjoy live music and local cuisine prepared by Chef Scott Staley and Two Pigs Farm, to benefit Dog PAWS. ‘Sunny Days and Starry Nights’

Members of the Salisbury Rowan Quilters’ Guild are collecting quilts in preparation for the combined biannual quilt show “Sunny Days and Starry Nights” on April 29-30 — showcasing quilts created by Salisbury’s two quilt guilds — at the First Baptist Ministry Center, 223 N. Fulton St.
More than 130 professionally judged quilts will be on exhibit along with cuddle quilts and VA quilts. You can also enjoy fresh North Carolina strawberry shortcake, a chicken salad sandwich or some freshly brewed tea in our Tea Room, Stitches & Strawberries.
Quilters in Salisbury and nearby communities have been gathering for more than 25 years as the Salisbury Rowan Quilters’ Guild, and have done numerous service projects for the community. For many years 80-100 cuddle quilts have been presented to the children at the Family Crisis Center, many of which are on display at this year’s show. Basic toiletry kits have also been presented to the women at the shelter and food has been donated to Rowan Helping Ministries.
Approximately 16 years ago a second quilt guild began meeting in the evening and the Starry Night Quilt Guild was born. Many quilters work during the day but still wanted to gather to share their love of all things quilted. Service projects have included making hundreds of pillow cases for Victory Junction and the children’s wards at the local hospitals. The current service project is making quilts for local veterans in Salisbury.
The highlight of this year’s show will be the presentation of quilts to approximately 25 local veterans. Many of the already completed quilts are on exhibit at this week’s show.
Nostalgic Americana concert
CONCORD — The Piedmont Prime Time Community Band will present a concert, “Nostalgic Americana,” on Saturday, April 30 at 3 p.m. at the Concord High School Auditorium, 481 Burrage Road. Admission is $5 for ages 13-64. Donations are welcome. See www.primetimeband.org for more information.
RCCC Student Art & Design Exhibition opens Friday
CONCORD — The annual RCCC Student Art & Design Exhibition, “Impulse,” will be showcased at ClearWater Studios for the third year in a row. The free opening reception is Friday from 5-7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Student artists and RCCC faculty will be present. The Impulse Student Art Show will be on exhibit through May 7. ‘The Colors of Life: Charles Ramsey Jr.’

Center for Faith & the Arts is pleased to host local Artist Charles Ramsey in their gallery at 207 W. Harrison St. in an exhibit titled “The Colors of Life.” The exhibit will run from May 5-July 15. An opening reception to meet the artist will be held Thursday, May 5 from 6-8:30 p.m.
Charles Ramsey is a North Carolina native who became fascinated with art and drawing when he was young. During high school his ambitions were divided between art and science. Charles won scholarships in civil engineering and physics. Two years into his studies, he transferred to East Carolina University School of Art. While at school and after graduation he worked as an interior designer as well as a technical artist for Warner Brothers and Disney. Returning home, Charles worked as city planner for the Town of East Spencer for seven years, retiring in 1997. Charles’s early work involved precise drawings that presented crisp representations of the world around him. More recently he has become fascinated by to possibilities of modern technology. Using a camera and digital technology, he transforms scenes of everyday life to flashes of color and movement that highlight the beauty of the Colors of Life.
Please join us to meet the artist and become acquainted with his work at our opening reception. Admission is free, but donations are always welcome. Gallery hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3-6 p.m., and Sundays 2 -4 p.m.

Mark your calendars to get Jiggy with the Piggy
KANNAPOLIS — Experience the smells and sights of more than 80 barbeque competition teams: the Jiggy with the Piggy BBQ Competition and Festival returns to downtown Kannapolis and the North Carolina Research Campus on May 6 and 7. Once again BBQ teams from around the U.S. will compete in this premier event sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. This year there will be more entertainment, carnival rides for children, more arts and crafts vendors, fireworks and of course, lots of BBQ to eat.

Tuesday, May 3: Jiggy with the Piggy 5K (run kannapolis.com) Part of the Run Kannapolis Series. Dress in your best piggy outfit to qualify for prizes and a cool Jiggy medal.
