The Salisbury City Council will discuss parking issues during its meeting on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at 217 S. Main St.

John Calvin Presbyterian Church has requested that the city limit parking on the portion of Overman Avenue between West Innes Street and Brenner Avenue to two hours between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.

That portion of the street currently allows all-day parking.

A petition submitted to the Engineering Department shows that 62 percent of properties owners are in favor of the change.

According the petition, the all-day parking is causing safety concerns. Along with blocking mailboxes and creating difficulties for emergency vehicles, it is also causing problems for the participants of the church’s Lunch and More program because the participants are not able to access parking. In addition, there is limited visibility entering and exiting the church’s parking lot.

A citizen has also requested restricting parking at all times along the east side of Walker Street starting at Overman Avenue and ending 180 feet north of Overman Avenue. A petition submitted to the Engineering Department showed that 100 percent of property owners are in favor of the request. The area currently has all-day parking.

If the ordinance is approved, the city will install the appropriate signage but leave the areas unmarked.

The department estimates the man-hours and signage materials needed to complete the parking changes will cost about $150.

In other council business, the council will:

  • Present a badge and shotgun to retiring Master Police Officer Alan Waller.
