Area Sports Briefs: NCHSAA salutes West’s Otto, Martin

The NCHSAA announced on Monday that West Rowan seniors Taylor Martin and Kacey Otto are among its 27 Heart of a Champion award winners.
The NCHSAA recognizes Heart of a Champion athletes for outstanding sportsmanship and citizenship.
Otto stood out for the Falcons in football and is doing well now in baseball. Martin has been all-county and all-conference in volleyball and basketball and is now playing softball.
They’ll be honored on Saturday, April 9, at a luncheon in Chapel Hill.

Rowan Legion
Rowan County American Legion baseball sign-ups will be at Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 on April 17, at 4 p.m.
Bring birth certificate or drivers license. There will be a notary on hand to notarize insurance forms free of charge.
If you plan to try out for the team plan to attend with a parent or notify Mark Cauble with any questions at 704-798-9991.
The tentative opening date for Rowan is May 21.

Prep tennis
East Rowan won 8-1 against Hickory Ridge on Monday to stay unbeaten.
Singles winners were Ike Emerson, Chance Brown, Robert Gray, Nikolas Pillsbury and Zakk Perdue. Emerson/Brown, Gray/Perdue and Pillsbury/Trey Dry swept doubles.

Carson won 6-3 against West Rowan in SPC play on Monday.
Graham Purcell, Lucas Sides, Hunter Smith and Avery Paschal won in singles for the Cougars. Purcell/Sides and Robert Taylor/Trexler Cloninger won in doubles for Carson.

Salisbury rolled to a 9-0 CCC win against North Rowan on Monday.
Spencer Storey, Hunter Carlton, David Derrick, Matt Sukkasem, Roarke Burton and William McGee had singles wins.
Storey/Derrick, Carlton/Sukkasem and Burton/Adam Drye accounted for doubles victories.

Prep soccer
Cassidy Sears scored for Carson in a 1-all tie with Mount Pleasant on Monday.

Salisbury improved to 9-1-1 overall with a 7-0 CCC road victory at Lexington on Monday.
Katie Bullock scored three goals. Emily Mann had two, and Ellen Simons and Maria Capito had one each. Mann and Capito scored their first goals of the season. Simons, Ana Romero, Shelby Holden, Nellie Brown and Kathryn Rusher had assists. Juliana Anderson recorded the shutout in goal.
Salisbury held Lexington to one shot on frame.
Salisbury hosts Thomasville at 6 on Wednesday.

Mid. school soccer
Erwin’s girls rallied to tie Mooresville 1-1 with Kamden Johnson scoring the goal.

College lacrosse
Catawba’s women’s lacrosse team lost to Mount Olive 17-5 on Monday.
Megan Shortt scored three goals for Catawba (5-6). Bethany Davis tied her school record with 17 saves.

College golf
In the Tennessee Rumble, Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) led Catawba in Monday’s first round by shooting 80.
