Area 13 Toastmasters Speech and Table Topics Contest

Phyllis Kombol won the Area 13 Toastmasters Table Topics contest on Monday, March 21 at the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce.

Kombol, a member of Goldmine Toastmasters Club in Kannapolis, will represent Area 13 in Division C contest, which will be conducted at UNCC on April 23 at 8:30 a.m.

Goldmine Toastmasters Club is one of more than 12, 000 Toastmasters clubs around the world. Each fall and spring, members from around the world compete in club-level speech contests. Through competition in the area, division, district and regional levels, contestants will vie for the title of “World Champion of Public Speaking,” which will climax at the organization’s Annual International Convention. 13th annual Scrabble Scramble 

Trinity Oaks Senior Living Community Presents the 13th annual Scrabble Scramble benefiting the Rowan County Literacy Council on Tuesday, April 19, at 5:30 p.m. The event includes dinner and three rounds of team scrabble. Raffle tickets are available to purchase for prizes throughout the evening. Cash prizes are also awarded.

KHA hosts Kay Brown Hirst

KANNAPOLIS — Kannapolis History Associates host Kay Brown Hirst, former Executive Director of the Rowan Museum, as she speaks on  “The Settling of the Back Country” and those early pioneers who traveled the Great Wagon Road. Hirst will also be telling about the Rowan Museum, the 1766 Old Stone House and the 1815 Utzman-Chambers house. The meeting is 7 p.m. on Monday at A.L. Brown High School in the Social Room. Relay for Life benefit features Matthew Weaver

The FBC Relay For Life team presents “Return of the Legends featuring Matthew Weaver and the GV Band” on Saturday, April 9 at 6 p.m. at First Ministries Center of First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

The group pays tribute to such musical legends as Patsy Cline, the Oakridge Boys, and Elvis Presley with great skill. Tickets for the event are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Light refreshments will be available for a small donation. Annual Hurley Park Spring Celebration

The annual Hurley Park Spring Celebration is Sunday, April 10 from 2-4 p.m. at Lake Drive and Annandale Avenue. An afternoon of music in the park will be provided by The Salisbury Swing Band.

Other entertainment includes Bubble Artist Steve Langley, Magic by Glen and carriage rides available by Horse & Carriage LTD of Salisbury. Also on hand will be the City of Salisbury Fire Department, Carolina Artists and the Rowan County Master Gardeners. Free refreshments will be provided by Cheerwine and Hurley Park. Nominations open for annual Service to Seniors Awards 

May is Older Americans Month. The Rowan Council on Aging is sponsoring its ninth annual “Service to Seniors Awards” program. The purpose of the program is to recognize, encourage, and support volunteers of all ages who provide services to older adult citizens of Rowan County.

If you know an individual of any age, a group or an organization who volunteers in service to older adults in the community, we invite you to nominate that person, organization or group for the award. Service should be to an older adult, or older adults, who are not family members of the nominee.

Nomination forms may be picked up at Rufty Holmes Senior Center or downloaded from the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center site, www.ruftyholmes.org

Deadline for submission is April 8, 2016. An awards committee appointed by the Council on Aging will receive, evaluate, and select winners. which will be recognized at the Awards Luncheon on May 13 at Rufty Holmes Senior Center.

Also recognized at the Awards luncheon will be businesses that, at their own request, have been evaluated and have met criteria to determine that they are “Senior Friendly Businesses.” Local businesses interested in this certification may contact the Council on Aging through the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.

 

Effective Communication Strategies

MONROE — Effective Communication Strategies will be presented on Monday from 10- 11:30 a.m. It is a free program that explores how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s disease. For caregivers, learning to decode messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language can help both parties to connect and communicate in meaningful ways.
