Carley Tysinger pitched Catawba’s softball team to a 2-1 (eight innings) and 7-1 sweep of SAC rival Carson-Newman on Friday at Whitley Field.
The sweep put the Indians alone in first place.
Catawba (22-9, 6-0 SAC) won the opener on Holli Chandler’s infield single in the eighth.
Tysinger had her riseball working and struck out 10 while holding Carson-Newman to two hits.
In the second game, Morgan Brann homered, Kristen Stinnard scored two runs, Katherine Shumaker went 2-for-2, and Delane Smith drove in two runs.
Tysinger (15-4) allowed three hits and fanned 12. The senior now has 1,137 career strikeouts as she closes in on the top-15 in NCAA history.
Brann and Stinnard had four hits each in the doubleheader.
Catawba will travel to Coker for a SAC doubleheader on Wednesday.

Prep baseball
East Rowan is hosting a six-team round robin tournament at Staton Field today, Monday and Tuesday.
East plays West Iredell at 1 p.m. today. The Greater Cabarrus Stallions take on Central Cabarrus at 4 p.m. West Rowan plays North Rowan at 7 p.m.

Prep golf
East Rowan’s golf team is in third place after the first 18 holes of the 19th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Nick Lyerly shot 67 to lead East on the first day. Bryson Sprinkle shot 70, Logan Shuping shot 73, and Ben Rollins shot 76.
Bellarmine College Prep of San Jose, Calif., shot a 6-under 274 as a team, led by Boots Del Biaggio who shot a sizzling 6-under 64.
Thomas Eubanks of Myers Park and Eddie Lai of Bellarmine College Prep shot 4-under 66s.
The Palmetto is a 54-hole, college-style event that allows high school teams to test themselves against opponents from across the nation.
Teams opened play with a qualifying round at True Blue Golf Club and were then flighted for the final 36 holes of competition.

Local golf
The 14th Annual Bob Hundley Golf Tournament fundraiser sponsored by the North Rowan Athletic Booster Club will be held on Saturday, April 30, at Corbin Hills.
Registration and lunch are at 12:30 p.m.
The putting contest is 1:15 p.m. Tee off is at 2 p.m.
The cost is $50 and includes lunch.

The UNCW Seahawks hit a pair of early home runs and downed visiting Elon 10-4 in a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game on Friday night.
Ryan Foster (Davie) held Elon to seven hits and gave up two runs in seven innings. Foster is 5-0.
