Nora Jane Struthers plays LIVE at Lee Street

The LIVE at Lee Street concert series is proud to present Nora Jane Struthers & the Party Line on April 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Born in Virginia and raised in New Jersey, Nora Jane Struthers began playing as a pre-teen, attending festivals and fiddlers’ conventions around the south with her banjo-playing father. After graduating from NYU with an education degree, she taught high school English in Brooklyn and put her music career on the back burner. But a visit to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the early 2000s changed that. Watching one of her heroes, Tim O’Brien, she stood in front of the stage, glanced back at the crowd and the mountains and thought, “This is what I want to do.”

But it was in 2012, when Struthers formed the Party Line with members Drew Lawhorn, Joe Overton, Brian Duncan Miller and Josh Vana, that everything started to come into sharper focus.

She says, “With the Party Line, I found the people I want to be with. And what instruments they play are what my band became. So I didn’t find a fiddle player. I found a great electric guitar player who I love hanging around with, and who wants to commit to my music…. I don’t know a lot of other female-fronted bands that are doing quite what we’re doing, so I feel like maybe we have something unique, which is always a good thing.”

Salisbury Symphony presents ‘Animals’ family concert 

Experience Lions, Tigers, and (Blue) Bears — Oh My! at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10 in the gymnasium at Livingstone College.

David Hagy will direct the Rowan County 5th Grade Honors Chorus, the Livingstone College Concert Choir and the Livingstone College Band, as they perform Menken: Songs from Disney’s The Lion King; Fine: Childhood Fables for Grownups (including “Tigeroo”); and Bartok: Bear Dance.

Auditions for ‘August: Osage County’ 

St. Thomas Players, the drama company of Center for Faith & the Arts, announces auditions for Tracy Letts’ 2008 Pulitzer-Prize-winning “August: Osage County,” produced in partnership with Lee Street theatre. Dr. Kurt Corriher will direct.

Auditions will be held Sunday-Monday, April 17-18, 7 p.m., at Lee Street theatre. Performances are July 21-30. Rehearsals will begin soon after auditions and will be held Sunday-Thursday evenings, 7-10 p.m. Not all actors will be called for every rehearsal. This is a big play that will require more investment than usual, so we understand that there will be conflicts. Bring a list of yours to auditions.

Acting experience is not a prerequisite, but familiarity with the script is. Arrive to auditions knowing the play and knowing what role(s) might best suit you. Scripts may be checked out ahead of time at Lee Street theatre; call 704-310-5507 to make arrangements.

Princess party

The Delphinian Society at Catawa College is sponsoring a Princess Party for little girls. Enjoy an afternoon with famous “royalty” while participating in arts and craft projects, learn to walk like a princess, play Pin the Nose on Olaf and have your picture taken with a “princess.”

The event is from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 10 in the Cannon Student Center at Catawba College. Tickets are $20 and available in advance at 704-645-4514 or at the door.

The Delphinian Society is a group of ladies at Catawba College who, through this society build lifelong friendships, fellowship and serve the college community. Members are involved with events such as Special Olympics, Relay for Life and other community service events. Their words are Sisterhood, Service, Trust and Leadership.

 

LEGO Extravaganza to be held at Partners in Learning

Partners in Learning will be hosting a LEGO Extravaganza on Saturday, April 2, from 9-11 a.m. This is a giant LEGO fan’s paradise, filled with interactive, creative, and educational activities.

This event is free and open to the public for rising kindergartners through 7th grade. Registration is required and limited to 50 children.

Friends of the Symphony will host “Picnic in the Park” at the Hurley Park Gazebo on Thursday, April 7 at noon.

OCT presents ‘A Night on Broadway’

CONCORD — Celebrating 40 years of community theatre, ‘A Night on Broadway’ is a fundraiser benefiting the Old Courthouse Theatre located at 49 Spring St. in Concord.

The event is Saturday, April 9, from 7:30-11 p.m. at The Copperfield Room, 270 Copperfield Blvd NE.
