PEMBROKE — Host UNC Pembroke jumped on Catawba early and claimed a 9-3 win in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Cox Field. The Braves improve to 15-8, while the Catawba Indians fall to 13-10.

The Braves hit a pair of two-run homers in the first two innings and led, 6-0, going to the third. Nick Debo hit the first one after a leadoff single by Roberto Rivera. Nick Salisbury connected in the second inning, while the Braves added RBI-singles by Stibel Aleman Saba and Hayden Buffkin for the 6-0 edge.

It was 8-0 after six innings before the Indians finally got on the scoreboard as Kyle Smith led off the seventh with a home run. Dylan Richardson accounted for the other Catawba runs with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Catawba managed just six hits on the day with Jake Kimble going 2-for-4. Will Albertson and Malachi Hanes had the other two Indian hits.

The Braves rapped out 15 hits in the win. Rivera had three hits and scored twice. Debo, Saba, Buffkin and Nolan Pierce each had two hits. Matt Fuhr (1-1) was credited with the win as he started and went two innings in a predetermined rotation for the midweek affair.

D.J. Laxton faired the best of the four Catawba hurlers. He allowed a run off five hits over three and a third innings. Ryan Kahny got the start and allowed the two early home runs to take the loss in his first decision of the year.

Catawba hosts South Atlantic Conference-leading Lincoln Memorial for a three-game series this weekend at Newman Park. The series opens on Friday night at 6 o’clock, followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m.
