A Salisbury man was charged Monday with taking police on a short foot chase through a drug store parking lot after an officer tried to serve arrest warrants for failure to appear in court.

Police charged Michael Wayne Brooker Jr., 28, of the 300 block of Cedar Drive, with misdemeanor resist, obstruct and delay an officer, and misdemeanor failure to appear/comply.

Salisbury Police Capt. Shelia Lingle said a detective recognized Brooker and attempted to stop his vehicle. Brooker pulled over at the Rite Aid on West Jake Alexander Boulevard and ran from the vehicle, leaving behind his girlfriend and child.

Brooker ran toward apartments at the end of Maupin Avenue, near Pinehurst Street, where he was caught. Officials say he was able to get free of his shirt and run away. Police officers had to tackle Brooker after he repeatedly ran around a car in the parking lot.

He was convicted in 2014 of assault with a deadly weapon, deliver and sell a controlled substance schedule II, possession with intent to sell a schedule II controlled substance, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, assault on a female, speeding to elude arrest, operating a vehicle without a license, and misconduct of public office.
