Phosphoric acid, xanthan gum, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, calcium disodium edta… Can you name all the ingredients in your salad dressing?

Join Rowan Public Library Monday, March 28, from 5:30-7 p.m. at South Rowan Regional Library (China Grove) for “DIY Vinaigrette,” the third workshop in our 2016 Learn.Act.Grow. series.

March is National Nutrition Month, and what better way to celebrate than attending a free workshop to learn how to make your own salad dressings? Chef Chris Herron and dietitian Katrina Weavil of Morrison Healthcare will discuss the health benefits of DIY versus processed, store-bought dressings.

Herron will demonstrate methods of blending, discuss emulsification, and highlight foods that pair well with different dressings.  Samples of vinaigrettes will be provided, as well as healthy snacks and water. Participants will be entered for a chance to win door prizes.

While there is no charge to participate, registration is strongly advised. Visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org or call 704-216-7841 to reserve your spot, or for more information.

Fast food hints

If you do have to eat or want to eat fast food at times, there are some simple says to save some calories. Eat + Run, a food blog from U.S. News and World Report offers these tips:

1. Always order the smallest serving possible.

2. Drink water, not calorie-laden soda or other sweetened drinks.

3 Best ingredients does not mean low-calorie. Beans, rice, veggies, chicken are all good for you, but when adding all that, plus cheese, calories tick right up.

4. A salad is not always the answer. Wedny’s BBQ Ranch Chicken salad has 600 calories, compared to their grilled chicken wrap which has 270. Watch out for dressings and cheese, which add lots of calories.

5. Customize your order. Hold the bacon. Dressing on the side. No cheese.

6. Grilled is better than fried.
