Rowan County Sheriff’s Office investigators say a Salisbury woman told them someone had been fraudulently stealing checks and withdrawing money from her bank account since September. No arrest has been made yet, but a suspect is being sought.

The woman, Beverly Ann Wilhelm, 73, spoke with a deputy on Dec. 30 and explained she had eight to 10 checks stolen between Sept. 23 and Dec. 30. The woman’s bank also notified her that money was being taken from her account.

There were purchases made at Food Lion in Salisbury and Spencer as well as the Circle K convenience store in Spencer. The suspect also bought items at Krishna’s Merchandise on Old Mocksville Road.

A report said the thief made an unauthorized transaction at the Rowan County jail’s ATM sometime between Nov. 24 and Dec. 30.

Sheriff’s Capt. John Sifford said the total amount of the purchases and withdrawals was about $1,000.

Sifford said it took some time for investigators to follow up with the victim after she moved to Lexington. Investigators believe they have identified the suspect. The investigation is ongoing, Sifford said.
