Salisbury’s girls soccer team battled A.L. Brown to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at Ludwig Stadium.
Sophomore Avery Crowley scored for the Wonders early in the second half, the first goal Salisbury has allowed this season..
SHS scored with under seven minutes left when Julia Honeycutt converted a PK. Salisbury (3-0-1) continued the pressure but was unable to pull out the victory.
“We continue to work to find our identity and the best pieces to the puzzle,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “After three games in four nights our resolve was really tested tonight. For the most part, I feel good about our progress.”
Julia Honeycutt, Kayla Honeycutt, Shelby Holden and Maria Capito were standouts or SHS.
Salisbury plays at Carson on Monday.

College swimming
McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) is competing for Queens in the D-II Nationals in Indianapolis.
Stevens was sixth in the 1000 on Wednesday and was second in the 200 freestyle on Thursday.

Prep baseball
Davie won 2-1 against R.J. Reynolds in a CPC game played on Thursday in Winston-Salem.
Davie (4-1, 2-0 CPC) manufactured two runs in the fifth. Mitchell McGee and Chris Reynolds knocked in runs.
Jalen Scott went the distance on the mound and fanned seven.

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions lost 5-1 to South Stanly on Thursday.
Seth Cauble, Hunter Shepherd and Tyler Hartsell had two hits each, while Noah Jarrett had a double.

Prep tennis
East Rowan won 9-0 against Gray Stone.
Winners were Ike Emerson, Chance Brown, Robert Gray, Addison Fry, Nikolas Pillsbury and Zakk Perdue.

Prep football
Mooresville has hired Marty Paxton as its new football coach. Paxton had been the coach at Hickory Ridge since 2007.

MLB
Jerry Sands (Catawba) drove in four runs in the Chicago White Sox’ 8-2 win over Texas on Thursday in Arizona spring training action.
Sands belted a three-run homer in a five-run first inning for the White Sox. Sands’ blast off the Rangers’ right-hander Nick Martinez came with two on and two out. He added a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Local golf
Ken Carpenter made a hole-in-one at Warrior on No. 6 on Tuesday.
Carpenter used an 8-iron on the 125-yard hole.
Witnessing the shot were Allen King, Jerry Ballard and Terry Dagenhart.

College hoops
Davidson County Community College won an Elite Eight game, 73-71, over Mohawk Valley, with Tre Williams (Carson) scoring 12 points. DCCC plays again today in the Final Four in New York at 5 p.m.

7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls capped off an unbeaten regular season with a 45-23 victory over Knox.
The Eagles (14-0) will be the top seed for the tournament which opens Saturday at South Rowan. Semifinals and finals will be at China Grove Middle School.
Carleigh Perry had 15 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists. Colbie Perry had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Jenna Robinson scored eight points, and Lani Isley contributed eight assists.

NCHSAA
Bayley Plummer of East Davidson and Tyler Maye of Farmville Central High School won NCHSAA Performance of the Week awards.
Plummer scored 13 points and had 24 rebounds in Saturday’s 2A regional final win. She holds the NCHSAA record for blocks in a single game with 21 and has 888 career blocks. Averaging 18.6 points, 16 rebounds and 8.2 blocks per game for the season, Plummer has signed with Appalachian State.
Maye, a junior point guard, scored 25 points in the 72-57 regional final win over Elizabeth City Northeastern.

NFL
Former Mooresville High star J.R. Sweezy, a guard, has signed a five-year contract with the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Sweezy had been a starter for the Seattle Seahawks.
