Concord’s Walker Cress, a James Madison signee, took the individual championship at the Dole Irish Creek High School Invitational on Monday.
Cress was the only golfer to break par. He shot 1-under 70 in windy conditions on the 6,600-yard Club at Irish Creek layout.
Cannon School won the Bobby Batson team championship for the third straight year, shooting 217 to top East Rowan (233) and Concord (245).
Leading Cannon School were sophomore Michael Childress and LSU commit Michael Sanders with 72s. Cannon’s Lansdon Robbins shot 73.
Cabarrus shot 594 and won county bragging rights with Rowan (647).
The top Rowan scores were posted by East’s Logan Shuping and Nick Lyerly. Both shot 75s.
South Rowan’s Chavis Parker shot 78.
East Rowan’s Chris Queen and Ben Rollins shot 83s. Carson’s Patrick Street and South’s Landon Johnson shot 84s. Shooting 85s were Salisbury’s Alex Antosek and East’s Bryson Sprinkle.

Prep soccer
South Rowan rolled 9-0 against North Rowan on Monday for the Raiders’ first win of the season.
A hat trick by Raquel Landaverde sparked South. Mary Jester scored twice, and Taylor Mauldin, Holiday Harvey, Rhiannon Kimmer and Katelyn Goodman added a goal each.
Goodman, Jester and Mauldin had assists.

Prep baseball
North Rowan lost at Central Cabarrus, 2-1, in non-conference baseball on Monday.
North (2-2) tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Vikings won in the bottom half. Henderson Lentz drove in the run for North. Corbin Smith had two hits.
Brandon White pitched brilliantly for the Cavaliers into the seventh.

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions pounded Southlake Christian 12-2 on Monday at Intimidators Stadium.
Tyler Hartsell tossed a five-hitter for the win.
Hunter Shepherd had three hits, while Caleb Threadgill had two. AJ Knight tripled, and Hartsell had a run-scoring double. Shepherd and Dalton Lankford drove in two runs each.
The Stallions (8-0) play at South Stanly at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

College baseball
Eric Tyler (South Rowan) hit a two-run homer for East Carolina in Saturday’s 4-3 win against Maryland.
Tyler is batting .349 with nine RBIs.

College golf
In the Bash at the (North Myrtle) Beach, Gardner-Webb’s Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 70-73 — 143 and tied for 13th.
George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 70-71 — 141 and tied for eighth.

College softball
Catawba split with UNC Pembroke at Whitley Field on Monday.
Catawba (14-7) won 6-1 in the opener but dropped the nightcap, 8-6, in eight innings.
Pitcher Carley Tusinger secured a place in the NCAA record books. She’s now 25th in Division II history with 1,063 strikeouts.
Catawba broke open the first game in the third inning when Gina Gerone belted a three-run homer to left-center. Kristen Stinnard had three hits.
Tysinger got the win and struck out eight.
In the nightcap, Jamie Johnson hit a grand slam in the eighth for UNCP.
Morgan Brann hit a two-run homer for the Indians, and Ashley Wagoner had three hits.
Catawba will return to action on Wednesday at Barton.

7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls beat China Grove 52-12 to wrap up first place in the conference with one game left.
Carleigh Perry scored 10 points for the Eagles, while Colbie Perry had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Lani Isley added eight points and six assists.
Ella Hedenskog and Jenna Robinson scored five points each. Haley Strange had eight rebounds.

Colby Patterson scored 10 points for the Eagles. Devon Shaver scored eight, and Vincent Jones and Edison White scored six each.
The Eagles will host Knox on Thursday.

Zay Davis scored 12 points. Jaharion Graham scored 10, and Nick Colson had nine. James Gladden added five points.
