The 12th Annual Thumb Pickers Convention
STATESVILLE — The 12th annual Thumb Pickers Convention will be held at Twisted Oaks American Bar & Grill on Friday-Saturday, March 4-5.
Artists appearing include Presley Barker, Richard Smith, Wayne Henderson & Friends, Clay Lunsford & Friends, Matthew Weaver & Clay Lunsford, Jason Lambert, Kenzi Baldwin and other special guests. (Presley Barker, who is 10 years old, recently won the National Guitar Championship in Nashville.)
The kickoff party and concert is Friday, March 4, from 6 to 10 p.m. with a meet-and-greet. Open mic and workshops are on Saturday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the concert is Saturday night from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $15per day or $25 for both days. Twisted Oaks Bar & Grill is located at 121 N. Center St. in Statesville. Third annual Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics
Saturday, Feb. 27, from noon-3 p.m.: The 2016 Polar Plunge will be held at the Elk’s River Park. There is a registration fee of $25 to jump into the lake and all proceeds go to benefit the Rowan County Special Olympics.
There will be food, a deejay, costume contests, giveaways plus trophies for the organization and school that bring the most jumpers and raise the most money, as well as medals for the best costumes. The Plunge raised just over $6,000 last year. The event begins at noon with registration. At 1 p.m. the costume contest will begin and at 1:30 folks ages 11 and up jump into the lake. At 2 p.m., kids 10 and under jump in for the Little Bit Plunge and at 2:30 p.m. the post-Polar Plunge/giveaways take place.

Music and a meal at Millbridge
The Back Creek Bluegrass Boys with Tori Jones will be providing music Saturday, Feb. 27 for the Millbridge Ruritan Club’s Chicken-n-Dumplings Fundraiser. This event is to raise money for the Ruritan Scholarship fund. Food will be ready at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 5:30 p.m. The band’s new CD, ‘Oft I Sing’ will be available at this event
‘Journeys, a Musical Exploration of Time and Space’
4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28: The Catawba Singers, Chamber Choir and PopAC present free one-hour program at Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on Catawba College campus. Works by Randall Thompson, Molly Ijames, Mack Wilberg, The Turtles, Eric Clapton and Carly Simon. Student conductors Hunter Safrit and Robert Thornton lead several selections. Accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette. Prior to the concert, students musicians from Catawba’s award-winning Popular Music program will present the music of Journey.
Livingstone to host exhibit and present one-act play
Livingstone College presents the Julia B. Duncan Players’ production of the one-act play “Herbert III,” by Ted Shine. There will be two shows on Saturday, March 5, one at 3 p.m. and again at 6 p.m.
The play will feature the talents of faculty members Angela Jacobs and Michael Connor, and is directed by Professor Connor. General admission is $5. The performance will be held in the Tubman Little Theatre on the campus of Livingstone College, 701 W. Monroe St. An art exhibit of the works of faculty and staff will be on exhibit before, during and after the shows.

Tonight: Catawba production of ‘Eurydice’
Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice” is a modernized perspective on the ancient myth of Orpheus. Cast members are students Peyton Glendinning as Eurydice (shown), Arnold Blohme as Orpheus, Randy Stull as Father, Chaz Cable as Nasty Interesting Man, Madeline Claire as Big Stone, Sammi Myers as Little Stone and Collette Simkins as Loud Stone. “Eurydice” plays at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday in Hedrick Little Theatre on the Catawba campus. Two area students in statewide Poetry Out Loud finals on March 5
GREENSBORO — Gabriella Leonel of A. L. Brown High School and Brianna Turner of Lexington Senior High School are two of the 35 students that will go on to the statewide Poetry Out Loud finals on March 5, in downtown Greensboro. More than 6,000 high schools students from across the state competed this year.
The public program begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Central Branch of the Greensboro Public Library. Three concurrent semifinals at the library and the Greensboro Cultural Center, start at 11:15 a.m. Winners of the semifinals will move on to the final competition, beginning at 2:45 p.m. at the Greensboro Historical Museum. All of these are free and open to the public.
