Rail Walk Studios & Gallery will host a reception for its art exhibit “Rail Walk Rocks” on Friday, Feb. 26, from 5:15 to 7:17 p.m.

There is more than one way to look at everything and that includes rocks. The artists of Rail Walk Studios & Gallery have proven that with their artistic responses to that word. The participating artists: Sharon Forthofer, Ashley Hinceman, Keyth Kahrs, Patt Legg, Tatyana Shurtz and Marietta Smith, challenged each other to produce an exhibit based on the word “rocks.” The resulting exhibit has a variety of pieces and points of view including installation pieces with rocks, art painted on rocks, art featuring rocking chairs and a host of art depicting rocks and rock formations.

Visitors to the gallery are invited to participate by moving and rearranging some of the rock gardens, changing the sand designs around the rocks and using the provided materials to write inspiring words on rocks and placing them in the arrangements.

Tatyana Shurtz is exhibiting her fantastical art painted directly onto rocks. Rock-based landscapes have been created on canvas by Sharon Forthofer and Keyth Kahrs with watercolors and oils by Marietta Smith. Patt Legg along with others will be creating installation art featuring rocks as the primary medium.

Ashley Hinceman wrote of her work in the exhibit: “‘Herman Melville once said ‘As for me, I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas, and land on barbarous coasts.’ In the show “Rocks” at Railwalk Gallery, I will be exhibiting cellphone snapshots of my favorite rugged terrains I experienced traveling across country pining for adventure and solid ground to call my own.”

Along with the main galleries, Rail Walk Studios & Gallery is home to eight artist studios which are open to visitors during regular opening hours of the gallery: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m.–4 p.m. There is never an admission fee and plentiful parking is also free.

The exhibit will run through the month of March. Rail Walk Gallery is located at 409-413 N. Lee St. in Salisbury’s Railwalk Arts District. There will be refreshments, music and audience participation art. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call 704-431-8964 or visit www.railwalkgallery.com
