Police say a Maryland woman calling herself God was charged Wednesday morning with trying to break into Southeastern Plumbing Supply with a metal pipe.

Salisbury Police charged Sonia Lynette Salgado, 46, of Summerset Court, Gwynn Oak, Baltimore, with misdemeanor breaking and entering and misdemeanor vandalism.

Police officers J.S. Lakey and J.C. Easler had just responded to a wreck at South Main and Thomas streets when Lakey spotted a woman walking at 2 a.m. near South Main Street and Military Avenue.

Lakey turned around in his patrol car with the intent to make inquiries with the woman when he saw her take a metal pipe and swing it at the window of the business, located at 531 S. Main St., breaking the glass.

Just as Lakey saw the woman swing the pipe, Easler too turned around in his patrol vehicle. The officers ordered the woman to drop the pipe and she complied, said Police Capt. Shelia Lingle.

When the officer asked for the woman’s name she said “Sonia Salgado. I am God.”

Authorities said Salgado also had a power drill and a wrench in her possession. Salgado told the officers she was trying to get into the building because of the 490 dead bodies inside it.

She remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,000 secured bond.
